Reviewers frequently praise the book for its captivating and addictive writing style, which masterfully blends fantasy elements with a grounded sense of reality. Many found the trilogy to be a rare and engaging masterpiece, highlighting Murakami's exceptional ability to create a unique, imaginative, and bizarre world that draws readers in without a single moment of boredom. The narrative is lauded for its deep exploration of complex themes such as love, faith, societal issues, and the human condition. Character development is consistently noted as brilliant, with even minor figures evoking strong reader sympathy. The book is also commended for its suspense, mystery, and the philosophical reflections it inspires, with some readers finding the conclusion to be a beautiful and satisfying culmination of the journey, even if it deviates from conventional expectations.

Despite the praise, a significant number of readers expressed disappointment, citing a perceived lack of substantial plot development and a slow pace, particularly after the dramatic events of the preceding volume. A common criticism is the failure to address or resolve many established mysteries and intriguing plotlines, leaving key elements unexplained. Some reviewers found the narrative repetitive, long-winded, and filled with mundane details or "filler" that contributed little to the overall story. The central romance is frequently described as unbelievable and underdeveloped, failing to provide a convincing foundation for the characters' motivations. Additionally, some readers were uncomfortable with what they perceived as disturbing or gratuitous sexual content and the objectification of women. The introduction of a new character's perspective was, for some, merely a recap of previous events rather than a meaningful contribution, leading to the overall impression that this installment was unnecessary and unnecessarily prolonged the story.

Ultimately, this book, and the trilogy as a whole, elicits strong, often polarized reactions, ranging from an "absolute masterpiece" to a "chaotic mess." It is widely recognized as a quintessential example of Murakami's unique literary style, characterized by surrealism, ambiguity, and philosophical depth. While some readers appreciate the unconventional narrative and the space for individual interpretation, those seeking clear-cut resolutions, fast-paced action, or a conventionally developed romance may find the experience frustrating. Therefore, the book is best suited for dedicated fans of Murakami's previous works and readers who appreciate literary genre-bending, deep reflection, and imaginative worlds, particularly those comfortable with unanswered questions and a slower, more meditative narrative approach.
