A Caribbean mystery

Reviewers largely praise A Caribbean Mystery as an engaging and entertaining installment in the Miss Marple series, often noting it as one of Agatha Christie's more enjoyable works. Many appreciate the strong and active portrayal of Miss Marple herself, highlighting her cleverness and her unique method of blending into the background while sharply observing human nature and using seemingly gentle "gossipy" conversations to uncover clues. The book's exotic Caribbean setting, though mostly confined to the hotel, is frequently mentioned as a refreshing change and provides an appealing atmosphere for the mystery. Readers found the plot captivating, featuring good twists and a balanced pace that keeps them guessing, with many unable to predict the killer. The dynamic between Miss Marple and the new character, Mr. Rafiel, is particularly highlighted as a delightful and quirky partnership, adding depth and humor to the narrative.

However, some reviewers found the plot to be somewhat predictable compared to Christie's more complex works, with a few discerning the killer early on, which lessened the suspense. A notable point of criticism is the presence of outdated social commentary and language that reflects the prejudices of the era in which the book was written, which some readers found unnecessary or off-putting. A few critics felt the pacing could be uneven, or that the ending was too abrupt, wishing for more detailed explanations of character relationships. Additionally, some missed Miss Marple's familiar supporting cast from St. Mary Mead, while others found the initial large cast of characters challenging to keep track of.

Overall, A Caribbean Mystery is considered a solid and enjoyable read for fans of classic crime fiction and Agatha Christie, though it may not rank among her absolute masterpieces for everyone. It is particularly recommended for those who appreciate Miss Marple's unique investigative style, enjoy a well-crafted "whodunit" with a limited pool of suspects in an exotic setting, and are looking for a captivating yet relatively quick read. Readers who appreciate the author's characteristic humor and reflections on aging, as well as an intriguing character dynamic, will likely find this a satisfying mystery.
