A Gold Star for Zog

The reviews overwhelmingly praise this book as an engaging and delightful read, particularly highlighting the exceptional partnership between the author and illustrator. Readers consistently commend the vivid, humorous, and colorful illustrations, often comparing them favorably to those in The Gruffalo. The story itself is celebrated for its superb rhyming and flowing prose, which makes it an ideal choice for reading aloud and ensures it is memorable for young audiences. Many reviewers found the protagonist, Zog, to be a likable and persevering character, while the princess is frequently lauded for defying traditional stereotypes by being strong, independent, and making her own choices. The book is also appreciated for its subtle yet powerful messages about perseverance, kindness, female empowerment, and pursuing one's true passions. Its creative concept of a dragon school, coupled with clever twists and a happy ending, contributes to its high re-readability for both children and adults.

Despite the widespread acclaim, a few reviewers noted that while excellent, the book might not quite reach the iconic status or singular focus of some of the author's most celebrated works, such as The Gruffalo. One reviewer specifically mentioned finding the rhyming forced in places, although this was a minority opinion contrasting with the general praise for the book's verse. Additionally, one reader felt the animated adaptation brought the characters and their development more vividly to life than the book itself, suggesting a preference for the on-screen version. A very minor point was also raised about a couple of lines where the rhythm seemed slightly off.

Overall, the book is considered a highly enjoyable and valuable addition to children's literature, consistently delivering the quality expected from its acclaimed creators. It is widely recommended for young children, ranging from toddlers who will enjoy it as a read-aloud to early primary school students (Kindergarten through second grade) who can engage with it independently. The book's inspiring themes and positive messages also make it a strong candidate for educational settings. Ultimately, it is presented as a charming and memorable story that both children and adults will appreciate, inviting repeated readings and solidifying its place as a new favorite for many families and fans of the author-illustrator team.
