Despite its widespread acclaim, the book has drawn some criticism and is considered controversial by a segment of readers. Concerns primarily revolve around its age-appropriateness for very young children, with some poems touching on potentially sensitive or morbid themes, or presenting situations that might be perceived as suggestive or encouraging disobedience. Reviewers note that certain poems deal with topics like peril or loss in a silly or direct way, which some parents feel might require discussion or explanation for younger audiences. Historically, the book has faced challenges and attempts at banning, with accusations ranging from promoting negative behaviors or disrespect for authority to containing morbid messages or suggestive illustrations.

Overall, "A Light in the Attic" is highly recommended as a brilliant and enduring collection that continues to delight generations. It is particularly suited for children aged six and up, who can appreciate its quirky humor and imaginative world, though many reviewers suggest it can be enjoyed by children as young as five with parental guidance. Adults also find significant value, discovering new layers of humor, wit, and profound meaning that were perhaps missed in childhood.
