Reviewers widely praise the book's exceptional writing style, describing Marguerite Yourcenar's prose as rare, beautiful, poetic, and elegant. Many highlight her powerful linguistic skill, noting the use of aphoristic sentences and deep reflections that resonate with readers. The narrative, often described as a long, moving letter, is commended for its profound emotional impact, evoking feelings of sadness and introspection. Readers appreciate the author's remarkable sensitivity in exploring a delicate theme, which was considered groundbreaking for its time of publication. The book is lauded for its timeless insights into human identity, self-acceptance, and the profound struggle of aligning one's inner truth with societal expectations.

Despite widespread acclaim, some reviewers found aspects of the book to be dated or anachronistic, noting that certain concepts around personal identity, while bold for the 1920s, may feel superseded today. A few critics point to the protagonist's narrative as having a "whiny tone" or exhibiting "self-victimization," which prevented them from fully engaging with the story. Concerns were also raised about the believability of some of the protagonist's statements, suggesting a potential disconnect between the author's privileged background and the character's depicted experiences. Additionally, some felt the treatment of the central theme was too subtle or understated by modern standards, and that the character study, while successful, might lack sufficient dimension for a completely satisfying work.

Overall, the consensus is that this is a brilliant and important novella, hailed as a powerful debut that remains highly relevant. Its depth and emotional intensity make it a memorable read for many, often prompting a desire for re-reading. The book is highly recommended for readers who appreciate introspective, philosophical, and poetic prose that delves into profound human struggles and the quest for authenticity. It will particularly appeal to those interested in the historical context of societal norms and personal freedom, as well as fans of Marguerite Yourcenar's distinctive literary voice and anyone seeking a short, impactful narrative that explores the complexities of the human spirit.
