Reviewers widely praise this installment for its continuation of James Herriot's captivating storytelling, offering a magnificent collection of animal rescue tales alongside poignant moments of animal loss. Many describe the book as heartwarming, hilarious, and deeply heartfelt, filled with timeless warmth and goodness. Readers particularly enjoy the well-developed characters, from the vets and Helen to the eccentric Yorkshire farmers. The author's skill as a master storyteller is frequently highlighted, creating an easy, funny, yet often profound reading experience. The audiobook version, read by Nicholas Ralph, is also highly recommended for its authentic and enjoyable portrayal of various Yorkshire voices and dialects.
However, some readers found the book's structure and tone to be a departure from previous volumes. The more adult and somber tone, influenced by the backdrop of wartime experiences, was occasionally described as jarring. The narrative choice to frame vet stories as flashbacks interspersed with anecdotes about Herriot's Royal Air Force training sometimes led to a less fluid reading experience, with some feeling the RAF segments didn't fully develop. A few reviewers wished for more of the low-tension veterinary drama found in earlier books, noting that this volume contains a higher number of tragic animal stories and heavier themes, including instances of human struggle and loss.
Despite these narrative shifts and a more melancholic undertone, many consider All Things Wise and Wonderful a wonderful and stirring addition to the series. It offers a deeper, more reflective experience, exploring themes of solace found in animals and the complexities of life during a challenging period. This book is highly recommended for existing fans of James Herriot’s work who appreciate his blend of humor and poignancy, even if it delves into more serious or bittersweet territory. It will particularly appeal to readers who enjoy stories about the human-animal bond, rural life, and a candid look at personal experiences, proving to be a comforting yet profound read for those seeking both laughter and reflection.
