An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding : Illustrated Edition

Our perceptions of the mind are divided into two distinct kinds: the lively impressions, which encompass all our sensations, passions, and emotions when we first feel them, and the fainter ideas, which are but copies of these impressions, conjured in thought or memory. Every idea we possess, however complex or abstract, ultimately traces its origin back to some preceding impression. Consider the vivid pain of a burn or the delight of a melody; the memory of these sensations, though resembling the original, can never quite capture their initial force and vivacity.

All the objects of human reason and inquiry naturally fall into two categories: Relations of Ideas and Matters of Fact. Relations of Ideas concern the truths of mathematics and logic, where their negation implies a contradiction, and their certainty is derived solely from the operations of thought. That three times five is equal to the half of thirty is a truth we grasp without recourse to observation. Matters of Fact, however, are known through experience, and their contraries are always possible, for no affirmation concerning fact can involve a contradiction. That the sun will rise tomorrow is a matter of fact, but its non-existence is conceivable.

Our understanding of matters of fact, particularly those concerning cause and effect, rests not on rational demonstration, but on custom and habit. When we observe one event consistently following another, we instinctively infer a necessary connection between them, expecting the same sequence in the future. Yet, no amount of reasoning can reveal this necessary connection; we never truly perceive the power by which one object produces another. Our belief that the future will resemble the past, which underpins all our inductive inferences, is a product of our nature, not a conclusion of our reason.

This realization leads to a tempered skepticism. While an excessive, all-encompassing doubt, known as Pyrrhonism, would render all action and judgment impossible, a moderate skepticism is essential for intellectual humility. We find that our belief in the continued existence of an external world, or the persistence of a self, cannot be rationally proven, but instead arises from the irresistible instincts of our nature. Such natural beliefs, formed by custom, are the great guide of human life, enabling us to navigate the world despite the limits of pure reason.

Turning our gaze to the realm of morals, we discover a similar dominion of sentiment over abstract reason. Moral distinctions, such as discerning virtue from vice, are not derived from the cold dictates of the understanding. Reason, as it merely deals with facts and relations, can never, by itself, motivate action or provide a foundation for what we ought to do. Instead, moral judgments arise from a peculiar internal sense, a feeling of approbation or disapprobation that stirs within us when we contemplate character traits or actions.

These moral sentiments are principally guided by considerations of utility and agreeableness. We approve of qualities and actions that are useful, either to ourselves or to others, because they tend to promote happiness and well-being. Benevolence, for instance, is universally lauded because of its extensive social utility; acts of kindness and generosity serve to bind society and foster mutual advantage. Similarly, traits that are immediately pleasing, whether to the possessor or to observers, also command our esteem.

Justice, too, finds its merit not in some eternal, immutable rational principle, but in its profound utility for the maintenance of society. Without rules governing property and agreements, human interaction would descend into chaos, and the common good would be impossible to secure. While some virtues, like compassion, appear to be natural inclinations, others, such as justice or fidelity to promises, are artificial constructs, born of social convention, yet equally essential for flourishing human communities.

Furthermore, the notion that all human actions spring from a selfish regard for one's own interest proves inadequate. We are endowed with a natural sympathy that allows us to partake in the feelings of others, moving us to approve of actions that promote their happiness, even when our own immediate advantage is not at stake. This capacity for fellow-feeling, combined with a discerning eye for what is useful and agreeable, forms the true foundation of our moral judgments, revealing morality to be a matter of human sentiment and experience, rather than abstract reason alone.
