Around the World in Eighty Days

The year is 1872, and in the hallowed halls of London's Reform Club, Phileas Fogg, a gentleman of impeccable habits and mysterious wealth, finds himself embroiled in a debate. The topic: the possibility of circumnavigating the globe in a mere eighty days, thanks to modern advancements in travel. Fogg, with his characteristic precision, declares it entirely feasible and, much to the astonishment of his fellow club members, wagers half his fortune - a princely sum of £20,000 - that he can accomplish this audacious feat. That very evening, with his newly hired, rather bewildered French valet, Jean Passepartout, in tow, Fogg departs from London, embarking on a journey against time itself.

Their meticulously planned itinerary whisks them across Europe by train and steamer, then through the Suez Canal. Unbeknownst to them, a persistent shadow falls upon their heels: Detective Fix, a Scotland Yard officer convinced that Fogg is the elusive bank robber who recently absconded with £55,000 from the Bank of England. Fix, without a warrant for Fogg's arrest, is forced to follow, hoping to apprehend his suspect on British soil.

In India, an unexpected delay arises when a section of the railway track proves unfinished, forcing Fogg to procure an elephant. It is during this overland trek that they stumble upon a harrowing scene: a young Indian woman, Aouda, about to be forced into a Sati ritual, burned alive on her deceased husband's funeral pyre. With a daring plan orchestrated by Passepartout, they rescue Aouda, who, now without family, joins their extraordinary expedition. Their journey continues through Calcutta, where Fogg and Passepartout face a brief arrest due to Passepartout's earlier unwitting desecration of a temple in Bombay, but Fogg swiftly pays their bail, and they press on.

The trio sails for Hong Kong, where Fix, still without his warrant, attempts to delay Fogg by getting Passepartout drunk and drugged in an opium den, causing the valet to miss their steamer to Yokohama. Fogg and Aouda, though dismayed by Passepartout's disappearance, manage to catch another vessel, eventually reuniting with their loyal servant in Japan, where he had joined a circus to earn passage. Together again, they cross the vast Pacific Ocean, encountering storms and other maritime challenges.

Upon reaching American shores, their race against time takes them across the continent by train. This leg of the journey is fraught with peril: a herd of buffalo blocking the tracks, a collapsing bridge, and a violent attack by Sioux warriors who capture Passepartout and two other passengers. Fogg, displaying a rare glimpse of emotion and courage, mounts a rescue mission with soldiers, but in doing so, they miss their connecting train. Undeterred, Fogg arranges for a sail-powered sledge to carry them across the snowy plains to Omaha, and from there, they barely catch trains to Chicago and then New York.

In New York, they arrive just moments after their steamer to Liverpool has departed. Fogg, ever resourceful, purchases a small trading ship, the Henrietta, and bribes its crew to sail for Liverpool, even resorting to imprisoning the captain to maintain their course and speed. As they finally reach Liverpool, just as victory seems within grasp, Detective Fix, whose long-awaited warrant has finally arrived, arrests Fogg. The delay is agonizing, seemingly costing Fogg his wager.

However, a dramatic twist awaits. After Fogg is finally released, as the true bank robber has been caught, he returns to London, believing he has lost by a mere five minutes. Yet, Passepartout, in his meticulousness, realizes their mistake: by traveling eastward and crossing the International Date Line, they have gained a full day. Fogg is not late, but precisely on time, arriving at the Reform Club just as the clock strikes the appointed hour. He wins his wager, but more importantly, he has found something far more valuable than money in Aouda's love and Passepartout's unwavering friendship, transforming his once solitary, methodical existence into one enriched by human connection.
