The chill of a winter's morning in Syria gives way to the plush warmth of the Taurus Express, carrying the esteemed Hercule Poirot towards Stamboul. A nagging premonition, a sense of unease, shadows his journey, even amidst the exotic landscapes. In Stamboul, a telegram summons him back to London, urging him to secure a berth on the famed Orient Express. Fortune, or perhaps fate, intervenes, and his old friend, Monsieur Bouc, director of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, finds him a place in the Calais coach, though the train is unusually full for the season.

As the luxurious train glides through the snow-laden landscapes of Yugoslavia, an American businessman named Samuel Ratchett approaches Poirot with an unsettling request: he believes his life is in danger and offers a substantial sum for protection. Poirot, however, finds Ratchett's countenance disagreeable and refuses his plea, stating simply, "I do not like your face." The train, a veritable microcosm of society, carries a diverse array of passengers, their lives intertwined in ways yet unknown, each with their own secrets and unspoken histories.

Just after midnight, the journey grinds to an abrupt halt. A heavy snowdrift has trapped the Orient Express in the desolate, mountainous Balkans. The silence of the snow-covered wilderness outside is soon shattered by a horrifying discovery within the Calais coach. Samuel Ratchett is found dead in his locked compartment, stabbed a dozen times, a brutal act committed with varying degrees of force, suggesting multiple assailants. The door, bolted from the inside, presents a classic locked-room mystery, ensuring that the murderer, or murderers, must still be among the stranded travelers.

With the world outside cut off by the relentless snow, Monsieur Bouc implores Poirot to take on the case, realizing that the reputation of the Orient Express is at stake. However, his "little grey cells" lead him to a far more extraordinary and morally complex truth: every single passenger in the Calais coach, excluding Monsieur Bouc and Dr. Constantine, was involved. They were all members of the Armstrong household or intimately connected to the family, each delivering a stab wound as an act of shared vengeance against the man who had escaped legal justice.

Faced with this revelation, a profound moral dilemma presents itself. Justice, in the eyes of the law, demands the apprehension of a single murderer. Yet, a deeper, more human form of justice has been served by this collective act. Poirot, acknowledging the unique circumstances and the suffering inflicted by Cassetti, chooses to present the simpler, fabricated solution to the Yugoslavian police, allowing the true perpetrators to escape the consequences of their actions, believing that some crimes demand an unconventional form of retribution.
