What other readers say
Liked
Reviewers generally commend this volume for Albert Uderzo's continued strong and often improved artwork, noting its vibrant details and beautiful imagery. Many found the central premise of Obelix finally drinking the magic potion to be an entertaining and amusing idea, leading to some funny moments and unique scenarios. The introduction of the character Spartakis, seen by some as a tribute to Kirk Douglas, was also a highlight. Some readers appreciated the whimsical elements, including the depiction of a mythical realm, and found the book to be harmless fun and a good light read.
Disliked
However, a significant number of reviews point to a perceived dip in overall quality compared to earlier Asterix adventures. Common criticisms include a lack of clear direction, a thin or messy plot, and a tendency to mix too many disparate elements without them gelling cohesively. Reviewers noted a shift towards more fantastical themes, moving away from the series' traditional historical grounding, which was not to everyone's taste. The humor, satire, and puns were often described as weaker or overdone, and some specific plot developments, such as Obelix's transformation, were considered "too much" or "laid on thick." Concerns were also raised about unexploited potential in subplots and the inclusion of unfortunate racial stereotypes.
In short
In conclusion, this volume elicits a mixed and somewhat polarizing reception among readers. While it offers strong illustrations and some genuinely amusing character moments, particularly involving Obelix, it is generally not considered among the series' strongest entries. This book would likely appeal to readers who appreciate Uderzo's distinctive artwork and are open to more fantastical storylines, as well as existing fans who enjoy seeing the characters in new and unusual scenarios. However, those seeking the sharp satirical wit, historical context, and tightly woven narratives characteristic of the classic Asterix adventures may find this installment less satisfying.
