John Rodriguez, known as Control, steps into the role of the new director for the Southern Reach, a secretive government agency tasked with managing Area X. This ecological anomaly, a mysterious and transforming wilderness, has resisted comprehension for thirty years, with every expedition into its borders ending in disaster or baffling returns. Control's mission is to impose order and uncover the truth behind the agency's crumbling operations and the enigmatic Area X itself.

Navigating a decaying facility filled with distrustful staff and bureaucratic entanglements, Control begins to sift through unsettling interrogations, hidden documents, and disturbing video footage related to the most recent expedition's sole survivor, a biologist. As he delves deeper into the Southern Reach's secrets, the eerie atmosphere and pervasive sense of wrongness within the agency mirror the unknown forces radiating from Area X. His investigation forces him to confront not only the mysteries of the anomaly but also uncomfortable truths about himself and the very organization he serves.
