Bajo las lunas de Marte 1. Una princesa de Marte

A Princess of Mars is widely celebrated as a foundational work that profoundly influenced the science fiction, fantasy, and adventure genres, paving the way for countless stories, including iconic franchises like Flash Gordon and Star Wars. Reviewers consistently praise Edgar Rice Burroughs' imaginative and unique world-building on Barsoom, populated by diverse alien races, strange creatures, and advanced technology like airships and an atmosphere plant. The book is lauded as a rollicking, action-packed adventure, full of swashbuckling, battles, and daring escapes that keep readers engaged. John Carter himself is often seen as an archetypal, virtuous hero, whose superhuman strength and agility on Mars, combined with his honorable and gentlemanly conduct, make him a compelling figure. Many readers found the story thoroughly enjoyable and even addictive, appreciating its fast pacing and the memorable supporting elements like the loyal Martian "dog," Woola.

Despite its influential status, A Princess of Mars is frequently criticized for being a very dated book, reflecting antiquated notions and societal values from its 1912 publication. Reviewers point out inconsistencies in its "science" and world-building, often relying on convenient plot devices and coincidences. A significant complaint centers on the first-person narration, which forces John Carter to constantly laud his own prowess, making him appear pompous and his character less interesting due to his near-unbeatability. The characters, including the titular princess, are often described as thinly drawn, wooden, or underdeveloped, with their relationships sometimes feeling shallow or "cheesy." Furthermore, many critics highlight problematic ideological elements such as pervasive machismo, sexism, colonialist attitudes, and subtle racism, which can make the book uncomfortable for modern readers. The plot can also feel repetitive, consisting of a seemingly endless series of similar battles, captures, and escapes.

Ultimately, A Princess of Mars is recognized as a classic, but one with significant flaws, best understood as an early example of pulp fiction prioritizing action and adventure over deep literary merit. While not a profound or thought-provoking read, its imaginative scope and sheer entertainment value have ensured its enduring appeal. This book is particularly recommended for younger readers, especially those who enjoy fast-paced adventure and heroic tales. It is also a must-read for fans of classic pulp science fiction, sword and planet subgenres, or anyone interested in the historical origins of modern fantasy and sci-fi tropes. Readers who can appreciate its pioneering spirit and overlook its dated aspects will find it a fun and engaging journey to the Red Planet.
