Beautiful and Dark

Readers consistently praise Rosa Montero's exceptional writing style, describing it as captivating, beautiful, clear, and poetic. Many express a desire to read all her works, highlighting how her narrative voice can conquer them regardless of the subject matter. The story, told through the innocent eyes of a young girl, is celebrated for its unique perspective on challenging realities, demonstrating how imagination can transform difficult circumstances. Characters are generally well-defined and memorable, with special commendation for Airelai, a wise Lilliputian whose profound stories and reflections resonate deeply with readers. The grandmother's insights are also noted as particularly interesting. The book is lauded for its exploration of significant themes such as innocence, hope, survival, and the intricate balance between beauty and darkness, often presenting a complex and nuanced world from a seemingly simple premise.

Despite the praise for its prose, the book receives some criticism regarding its plot and structure. Several reviewers found the main storyline to be somewhat underdeveloped, describing it as "incomplete," "thin," or "almost non-existent," and wishing for more detailed exploration of certain events. Some perceived the narrative as occasionally "disordered and chaotic," with episodes from different time periods that felt disconnected from the central theme, and key revelations sometimes presented without sufficient surprise. A minority of readers also felt that some characters, despite being memorable to others, lacked sufficient depth, making it difficult to form a strong connection. For a few, the introspective nature of the narrative, prioritizing the "how" over the "what," was not to their personal taste, impacting their overall enjoyment.

In conclusion, the book is generally regarded as a testament to Rosa Montero's masterful storytelling, with her distinctive voice often elevating a story that some found lacking in conventional plot development. It is a work that prioritizes lyrical prose and introspective reflection over a fast-paced, action-driven narrative. This book would particularly appeal to readers who appreciate literary fiction, character-driven stories, and narratives told from a child's perspective that blend harsh realities with imaginative escapism and a touch of magic. Those who enjoy exploring profound themes of innocence, resilience, and the duality of life's experiences, and who value the beauty of language above intricate plotlines, are likely to find this a deeply moving and thought-provoking read.
