In the quaint, idyllic town of Woodbrook, where anthropomorphic animals live in harmony and the scent of cedar and apple pie fills the air, resides Samantha Strong. She is a beloved brown bear, the friendly owner of the local hardware store, and a pillar of her tight-knit community. Everyone knows Sam, and everyone likes her, seeing her as nothing more than a kind, dependable neighbor.

Beneath this charming facade, however, Sam harbors a dark secret: she is a meticulous and cold-blooded serial killer. Her cardinal rule, the one that has allowed her to maintain her cozy life, is never to murder locals. Instead, she journeys to the sprawling city beyond the forest, where a sea of potential victims awaits, and one missing person will hardly be noticed. There, she indulges her monstrous urges, disposing of the remains with chilling precision.

Her carefully constructed world is shattered when a gruesome discovery rocks Woodbrook. During the town's 200th-anniversary parade, the dismembered body of Martin the goat is found gruesomely displayed on a float, his chest pulled open and limbs splayed like a crucifix. This horrific act is the first murder in Woodbrook in decades, and it sends a ripple of panic and accusation through the once-peaceful community.

The emergence of a rival killer in her own backyard infuriates Sam. Not only does it threaten to expose her own hidden life, but it also offends her sense of order and her unspoken claim over the town. With Sheriff Patterson, a diligent dog, barking up every wrong tree, Sam realizes she must take matters into her own paws. She embarks on her own investigation, determined to unmask the copycat before the police stumble upon her own buried secrets.

The investigation leads Sam to Nigel Albright, an intensely antisocial individual who has been observing her and mimicking her methods. Nigel, consumed by a twisted admiration for Sam, believes that by committing increasingly brutal murders within Woodbrook, he can prove himself her equal and gain her attention. He even goes so far as to frame Sam for the murders, using photographs he's taken to implicate her.

A dangerous game of cat-and-mouse ensues, with Sam fighting not only to clear her name but to reclaim control of her territory. She discovers Nigel's allergy to violets, a crucial clue, and sets a trap. In a ruthless display of her methodical nature, Sam orchestrates a confrontation where Nigel finds his mother, Lola, dead, making it appear as though he was responsible.

With Nigel paralyzed by a potent curare, Sam reveals his fate: he will be framed as Woodbrook's true monster, and she will reclaim her pristine reputation. She then ends his life, eliminating the threat he posed and ensuring her carefully curated existence remains undisturbed. With Nigel dead and the evidence stacked against him, Woodbrook returns to its quaint tranquility, unaware of the true predator who walks among them, her deadly hobby now seemingly safe once more.
