Between Shades of Gray

In 1941, fifteen-year-old Lina is a Lithuanian girl preparing for art school, dreaming of summer, and thinking about boys. But one night, Soviet secret police burst into her home, deporting her along with her mother and younger brother. They are forced onto a crowded, filthy train car and sent on a harrowing journey to a Siberian labor camp, separated from her father and everything she has ever known. In this brutal new reality, Lina finds an unlikely solace in her art, documenting the atrocities and smuggling her drawings out of the camp in the desperate hope that they reach her father.

Faced with unimaginable hardship and cruelty, Lina's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of hope and love in the darkest of times. It sheds light on a corner of history that is often overlooked - the genocide of the Baltic peoples under Stalin's regime. This novel explores how, even when stripped of everything, art and human connection can preserve one's identity and will to survive, offering a gripping and illuminating reason to understand the past.
