What readers say
4.59
1.1K ratings across the webReviewers widely praise Botanicum for its extraordinary visual appeal, consistently highlighting Katie Scott's illustrations as stunning, gorgeous, and frame-worthy. The book's impressively large format is frequently mentioned, making it ideal for display as a coffee table book and for shared viewing. Its thoughtful design includes brilliant use of white space and a clear layout that prevents readers from feeling overwhelmed. Many appreciate how the book introduces a vast array of plant life, from mosses and fungi to giant sequoias and carnivorous plants, providing accessible and valuable information for those new to botany. The overall presentation is often described as feeling like a treasured, important tome.
Despite its many strengths, some reviewers felt the book was too short, wishing for more in-depth content. For those with existing botanical knowledge, the information can sometimes feel simplified or "toned down," offering less new insight. Critics occasionally noted an unevenness in the level of detail provided for different plants, with some receiving extensive information while others were described more superficially. A few readers expressed concern about the presentation of evolutionary theories as definitive facts, or a lack of flow in the informational text. Additionally, the absence of a clear sense of scale in the illustrations was mentioned as a potential drawback, particularly for younger readers.
Overall, Botanicum is celebrated as a visually magnificent and engaging introduction to the plant kingdom. While it may not satisfy those seeking an exhaustive or deeply scientific treatise, its primary strength lies in its ability to captivate and inform beginners of all ages. This book is highly recommended for children, young readers, and anyone new to botany who desires a beautiful, accessible overview. It also serves as an exceptional art book, making it a perfect addition to homeschool libraries, a stunning display piece for any home, or an inspiring resource for budding artists and nature enthusiasts.
