A woman finds a life of solitude and freedom working as a cook on a merchant ship, a detached existence that earns her the nickname Boulder. Her solitary world is fractured when she meets Samsa, and a powerful, sensual love affair begins. This connection pulls her from the sea to a new life in Iceland, forcing her to confront a future she never imagined. In giving up her independence for love, she finds herself anchored in a relationship that will soon demand more than she knows how to give.

The life they build together is challenged when Samsa decides she wants a child. For Boulder, who has never desired motherhood, this decision creates a rift, transforming the partner she loves and the life she reluctantly chose. The story becomes an unflinching examination of the compromises made for love and the tension between fierce independence and the deep need for intimacy. It explores the complexities of queer relationships, motherhood, and the struggle to remain true to oneself when faced with the life-altering expectations of a partner.

What other readers say

Liked

Reviews consistently praise Eva Baltasar's Boulder for its stunning and poetic prose, expertly translated by Julia Sanches. Many describe the writing as masterful, filled with rich metaphors and vivid imagery that create an effervescent and electrifying reading experience. The novella is celebrated for its sharp, visceral, and powerful narrative, offering a comically pessimistic yet deeply insightful look at adulthood, romantic relationships, and the complexities of queer women's lives. Readers highlight the authentic and unapologetic voice of the protagonist, Boulder, who offers a fresh and often raw perspective on themes of freedom, independence, and desire. The book is lauded for its ability to tackle significant topics like love, sex, commitment, and motherhood from a distinct female viewpoint, breaking stereotypes and providing a refreshing contribution to literature. Its compact nature is seen as a testament to what can be achieved in a short, intensely crafted work.

Disliked

Despite widespread acclaim for the prose, some readers found the writing style to be a point of contention. Criticisms include an perceived overuse of similes and metaphors, which occasionally felt excessive, superfluous, or even bland, leading to a sense of "over-writing." For some, this dense lyrical style, coupled with a lack of traditional dialogue or scene work, made the narrative feel slow or distracting, failing to propel the story forward and, at times, making the short book feel longer than its page count. A few reviewers also found the protagonist, Boulder, to be unlikeable, whiny, or boring, noting a perceived lack of character development or a repetitive focus on her dislike for others. Furthermore, some felt that the exploration of motherhood, while unconventional, lacked meaningful depth, or that the relationship dynamics, particularly the tension between characters, felt somewhat artificial or resulted in conclusions that were not particularly revelatory.

In short

Overall, Boulder is regarded as a powerful and introspective novella that offers a challenging yet insightful portrayal of relationships, identity, and motherhood. It stands out for its unique exploration of female roles and desire within a queer context, making it a compelling read for those seeking literature that subverts traditional narratives. This book is particularly recommended for readers who appreciate highly lyrical, metaphor-rich prose and a deep dive into the psychological landscape of complex characters, even if they are not always conventionally sympathetic. Individuals interested in philosophical ruminations on freedom, commitment, and the evolving nature of love would find this novella rewarding. However, readers who prefer a more straightforward, plot-driven narrative or less abstract language might find its distinctive style less engaging.
