Boy meets boy

This book is widely praised for its charming and optimistic portrayal of a "gay utopia," a world where homophobia is virtually absent and diverse sexualities are celebrated as the norm. Many reviewers enjoyed the escapist fantasy, finding it fun, fabulous, and a refreshing space where LGBTQ+ teens can experience typical high school dramas without the burden of societal prejudice. The protagonist, Paul, is often described as a well-adjusted, popular, and confident individual with a supportive family, and his journey through first love and friendships resonated with readers. The book is lauded for its sweet and heartfelt romance, its celebration of individuality, and its focus on universal themes of loyalty and self-acceptance. Its poetic and witty writing style, along with its fast pace, also contributed to its appeal as an enjoyable and quick read, with many finding memorable quotes to highlight.

However, a significant number of reviewers found the utopian setting to be overly unrealistic, hyperbolic, and even contrived. They questioned whether such an idealized world could inadvertently make real-world teens feel worse by highlighting the stark contrast with their own experiences. Critics pointed to extreme examples within the narrative, such as the transformation of institutions or the casual acceptance of complex social dynamics, as pushing the boundaries of believability into the realm of the ridiculous. Furthermore, some felt that despite the diverse cast, many characters lacked depth and fell into stereotypes, and the protagonist's "Pollyanna" attitude made him difficult to sympathize with, especially when he made questionable romantic choices that bothered many readers. The plot was often deemed simple, pedestrian, and at times, the writing was criticized for being overly flowery or self-indulgent. Some also noted that the book, originally published in 2003, felt somewhat outdated.

Overall, this book is generally seen as a sweet, lighthearted, and often charming read, though its ultimate impact varies widely among readers. It is recommended for those seeking an escapist and positive gay romance, particularly LGBTQ+ teens who wish to see themselves in a story focused on love and friendship rather than struggle and coming out. Readers who enjoy quick, upbeat narratives and appreciate poetic language, even with a simple plot, would likely find it enjoyable. However, those looking for realism, complex character development, or a more nuanced exploration of social issues might find the book underwhelming or frustrating due to its idealistic setting and sometimes shallow execution.
