Breaking Through: My Life in Science is widely praised as a deeply inspiring and compelling memoir, celebrating the extraordinary perseverance and unwavering dedication of its author. Readers laud the book for its honest portrayal of a remarkable life journey, from humble beginnings in Hungary to groundbreaking scientific achievements. Many reviewers highlight the author's relentless curiosity and resilience in overcoming numerous personal and professional challenges, including discrimination and setbacks within academia. The narrative is frequently described as a powerful testament to the human spirit, offering a profound sense of vindication and joy as the author's decades of unappreciated work ultimately receive global recognition. The book is also commended for its accessible writing style, making complex scientific concepts understandable for a broad audience, and for its portrayal of a dedicated scientist who serves as an exceptional role model for aspiring individuals in science, especially women.

While overwhelmingly positive, some reviews note that the writing, though generally engaging, occasionally feels "a bit off" in places. Additionally, some readers found the book to be surprisingly light on highly technical scientific details, focusing more on the author's personal upbringing and career struggles as a bench scientist. The narrative openly addresses the systemic challenges and "vicious cycles" prevalent in academic research, including the political hurdles and lack of support the author faced for extended periods. These aspects, while contributing to the book's authenticity and emotional impact, can evoke feelings of frustration and anger in readers regarding the injustices endured by the author throughout her career.

Overall, Breaking Through is highly recommended as an impactful and memorable read that will resonate deeply with many. It is particularly suggested for those considering a science-related career, young scientists, and women navigating male-dominated fields, offering a powerful message of discipline, hard work, and self-belief in the face of adversity. Beyond the scientific community, the book appeals to anyone who appreciates inspiring stories of immigrants, personal triumph over systemic obstacles, and the profound dedication required to pursue one's passion. It is celebrated as a significant work that underscores the importance of fundamental research and the invaluable contributions of persistent individuals to humanity.
