My first brilliant idea to rake in some dough involved shoveling snow. I thought I'd found a shortcut by melting the snow with water, but that just turned driveways into treacherous sheets of ice, forcing Dad to make me spend even more money on rock salt to fix my mess. Then, Rowley and I decided to host our own Holiday Bazaar, just like the school's, selling snacks and gifts. Advertising proved tricky; the local paper wasn't interested, and Vice Principal Roy wouldn't let us hand out our homemade newspaper at school. So, we taped our neon signs to the school wall, thinking we were geniuses.
That's when the rain hit, turning our vibrant advertisements into a smear of green ink all over the bricks. We bolted, but the damage was done. Soon, the school was investigating the vandalism, and I was the prime suspect. The thought of being caught, of facing the music, filled me with a cold dread that even the impending winter couldn't match. I imagined myself being sent to a juvenile detention center, and the paranoia was really starting to get to me.
Just as the authorities seemed to be closing in, a massive blizzard descended, trapping our family indoors. Dad, lucky him, got stuck at a nice hotel near his work, leaving Mom, Rodrick, Manny, and me to face the impending cabin fever. The power went out, the basement flooded, and we were left shivering and bored, convinced we were experiencing a full-blown crisis. Rodrick, whose bedroom was now underwater, had to share my room, adding another layer of misery to the already stifling atmosphere.
Days blurred into a monotonous cycle of hunger and boredom. Mom, bless her heart, tried to keep our spirits up, but even she was starting to fray. Manny, always the wildcard, somehow managed to break Mom's glasses, and I was stuck helping her deal with him. The worst part was the cold, the constant chill that seeped into everything, making our house feel like an icebox. We huddled together, trying to conserve warmth, as the snow piled higher and higher outside, burying us deeper in our confinement.
Then, just when I thought I couldn't take another minute of being snowed in, Rowley appeared, seemingly unfazed by the blizzard. He casually mentioned that his house, and indeed the rest of the town, still had electricity. It turned out our "power outage" was all Manny's doing; he'd flipped every breaker switch in the house, except for the one to his own room. The relief, and the sudden realization of Manny's cunning, was almost too much to process.
Christmas Eve finally arrived, and with it, Dad. The snowplow eventually made its way down our street, freeing us from our frozen prison. On Christmas morning, despite the chaos, we exchanged gifts, wrapped in trash bags because the blizzard had messed up Santa's schedule. I even got a signed book, though the signature was for "Craig." Later, I saw a newspaper article that mistakenly hailed me as a selfless hero for clearing the church's snow, making it seem like I'd done it for the homeless. It wasn't exactly true, but I wasn't about to complain. Maybe, just maybe, I could use this unexpected fame to my advantage.

Rating Sources
Readers generally found this installment to be a highly enjoyable and funny read, with many appreciating the clever jokes and situational humor. The book's distinctive plot, centered around a blizzard and the resulting cabin fever, offers a fresh experience compared to previous entries in the series. Reviewers frequently highlighted the effectiveness of the illustrations and writing in enhancing the comedic elements, making it a quick and engaging read. Many praised the character dynamics, particularly Greg's unintentional troublemaking and Manny's mischievous antics, which cause significant challenges for the family. The book also proved popular with younger readers and those who typically struggle with reading, serving as an entertaining way to encourage engagement.
Despite its positive reception, some readers felt that this book did not quite live up to the standard set by the earliest books in the series, perceiving a decline in overall entertainment value. Criticisms included a perceived lack of a cohesive plot, with the narrative sometimes feeling like a collection of disconnected anecdotes rather than a continuous story. Some reviewers found the humor in the initial sections to be less impactful, and felt that certain redemptive moments for Greg seemed formulaic or tacked on. Concerns were also raised about the consistency of character development, with some finding Greg's continued belief in certain childhood fantasies unrealistic for his age, and a general lack of maturity observed across the characters over the course of the series. A few also noted that the roles of certain family members were diminished or portrayed in an annoying manner.
Overall, this book offers a generally positive reading experience, particularly for those seeking a lighthearted and humorous escape. While opinions on its overall quality compared to previous books are varied, it is widely recommended for existing fans of the series. Its engaging format and relatable situations, including Greg's trouble with school authorities and attempts to earn money, make it an excellent choice for young readers, especially those who are reluctant to pick up books. The book's strong holiday theme also makes it an ideal read during the winter months, providing consistent laughs and a break from more serious literature.
