Ce monde disparu

The reviews for Dennis Lehane's World Gone By highlight its strengths as a gripping and masterfully written historical crime novel. Readers consistently praise Lehane's exceptional prose, vivid dialogue, and talent for crafting a palpable atmosphere, particularly in its depiction of 1940s Tampa. The book is lauded for its richly drawn and complex characters, with protagonist Joe Coughlin noted as an engaging figure who, despite his criminal life, exhibits relatable qualities such as devotion to his son and moments of moral reflection. The narrative builds tension effectively, often described as a "ticking clock" that keeps readers absorbed. Furthermore, the novel explores profound themes of morality, the consequences of a life of crime, and societal issues like race relations, adding significant depth to the gangster genre. Many consider it a powerful and satisfying conclusion to the Coughlin family trilogy.

Despite its merits, World Gone By receives criticism, primarily when compared to its predecessors in the trilogy. Several reviewers found the book's scope to be narrower and less ambitious than "The Given Day" and "Live by Night," leading to a sense of disappointment. Some felt the plot occasionally dragged, describing it as slow or, at times, a generic gangster story that didn't introduce enough new elements to the genre. A notable point of contention for some readers was the inclusion of spectral or ghost-like elements, which were perceived as strange, confusing, or out of place within the historical fiction setting. Additionally, some felt that certain thematic explorations had been more thoroughly addressed in earlier volumes, leading to a "been-there-done-that" feeling. A few reviewers also mentioned the presence of disturbing or challenging content, which they found difficult to stomach.

Overall, World Gone By is considered a good, albeit sometimes flawed, entry that successfully brings the Joe Coughlin saga to its conclusion. While it may not reach the epic scale or innovative heights of the earlier books for all readers, it remains a compelling read due to Lehane's undeniable storytelling prowess and character development. This book is highly recommended for existing fans of Dennis Lehane, especially those who have followed the Coughlin trilogy, as reading the series in order is often suggested for the most rewarding experience. It will appeal to readers who enjoy historical crime fiction, gangster narratives, and psychological thrillers that delve into moral ambiguities and the human condition, provided they are prepared for a potentially melancholic tone and some challenging content.
