Cinco esquinas / The Neighborhood

Mario Vargas Llosa's "The Neighborhood" is widely praised for its engaging and fast-paced narrative, which keeps readers' attention from beginning to end. Reviewers highlight the author's versatility, noting a more traditional structure compared to some of his other works, while still showcasing his mastery of storytelling. The novel is commended for its vivid portrayal of 1990s Lima, immersing readers in the political and social climate of Peru during a turbulent period marked by inequality, terrorism, and corruption. Many appreciate its exploration of significant themes such as the abuse of power, the role of sensationalist media in political maneuvering, and the stark contrast between the lives of the super-rich and the struggling poor. The book's ability to create a strong sense of place and atmosphere, coupled with its insightful social commentary, makes it a compelling and thought-provoking read for many.

However, the book also draws significant criticism, primarily concerning its explicit content and perceived narrative flaws. A recurring point of contention is the inclusion of numerous, often graphic, sex scenes, with many reviewers finding them over-the-top, repetitive, and at times, disconnected from the main plot. Some critics describe these passages as gratuitous or even trashy, detracting from the novel's overall quality and feeling out of place. Compared to Vargas Llosa's earlier, more celebrated works, "The Neighborhood" is frequently described as lacking his usual subtlety, charm, and consistent writing quality. Reviewers also point to underdeveloped characters, particularly among the wealthy elite, and a storyline that, while intriguing, sometimes fails to fully integrate its various threads or provide a satisfying resolution. Some felt the plot was too trivial or a "first draft" in its execution.

Despite its mixed reception and acknowledged flaws, "The Neighborhood" is generally considered an interesting, if not outstanding, addition to Vargas Llosa's oeuvre. It is recommended for readers interested in the political and social landscape of Peru in the 1990s, offering a potent, albeit sometimes heavy-handed, critique of corruption, media manipulation, and societal divides. Those who appreciate the author's courage in tackling thorny subjects and his innovative narrative techniques may still find value in this book. It is best suited for readers who can overlook or tolerate explicit content and are drawn to political dramas with a strong sense of place, even if it doesn't represent the author at his absolute peak.
