Cleopatra. Una vida

Stacy Schiff's biography of Cleopatra is widely praised for its meticulous research and compelling effort to unmask the historical figure behind millennia of myth and legend. Reviewers highlight Schiff's success in separating fact from sensationalized fiction, presenting a more nuanced and humanized portrait of the Egyptian queen. The book is lauded for its engaging, witty, and often wry prose, which makes the complex historical narrative accessible and enjoyable, often reading like a novel. Readers appreciated the vivid descriptions of the ancient world, particularly Alexandria, and the rich historical context provided, bringing Cleopatra's environment to life. A significant positive is the book's portrayal of Cleopatra as an exceptionally intelligent, shrewd, and capable ruler, emphasizing her political acumen and strategic genius in a male-dominated era. Many also commend the book for offering a valuable counter-narrative to traditional, often misogynistic, historical accounts.

Despite its strengths, the book faces criticism, primarily stemming from the inherent challenge of its subject: the scarcity of contemporary and reliable sources on Cleopatra. This often leads to a speculative narrative, with reviewers noting a frequent reliance on phrases like "would have," "could have," and "might have," which some found unsatisfying. Certain readers also described the writing style as dense, overwritten, or lacking flow, characterized by lengthy paragraphs and complicated sentence structures that occasionally hindered readability. Some felt the narrative became bogged down in excessive detail about Ptolemaic family dynamics or Roman politics, detracting from the central focus. A few critics perceived an overt pro-Cleopatra bias, suggesting the author sometimes interpreted events too favorably toward her subject or disproportionately critiqued male figures. Additionally, some readers found it difficult to form a deep emotional connection with Cleopatra, given the book's emphasis on her elusive nature.

Overall, Stacy Schiff's "Cleopatra: A Life" is considered an impressive and significant work, successfully navigating the formidable challenges of its subject matter to offer a fresh perspective. It provides a rich and informative account that encourages readers to re-evaluate their understanding of one of history's most iconic women. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in ancient history, particularly Roman or Ptolemaic Egyptian periods, and those curious about the true story of Cleopatra beyond popular culture portrayals. It will appeal to readers who appreciate thoroughly researched biographies that challenge established narratives and enjoy an intellectual yet engaging writing style, especially those new to Cleopatra's complex and fascinating life.
