Despite the widespread positive reception, some reviewers expressed reservations. A significant concern for a few was the book's focus on Santa Claus rather than the religious aspects of Christmas, leading to objections about it being "Christmas without Christ." One reviewer found the plot to "jump around a lot" and stated they would not read it again. Another point of criticism involved concerns about the depiction of safety in certain situations, with reviewers feeling that the book did not adequately address the real-life dangers. A minor critique for the audiobook version was the lack of accompanying "read along" illustrations, which some felt would benefit new readers.

Overall, this book is largely celebrated as a heartwarming and enjoyable addition to the Clifford series, particularly for the holiday season. Its strengths lie in its engaging narrative, vibrant illustrations, and the enduring appeal of its protagonist. While some readers had concerns regarding its thematic focus or specific plot elements, the overwhelming sentiment is positive. This book is highly recommended for young children, specifically Pre-K to 1st grade students, who are already fans of Clifford the Big Red Dog and those looking for a lighthearted, fun-filled Christmas story centered around Santa and holiday activities.
