Comme dans les livres

The book is frequently praised for its sweet, cute, and adorable romance, particularly highlighting the dynamic between the main characters. Many readers found the fake dating trope to be well-executed and enjoyable, offering a light and fluffy contemporary read that is perfect for a quick escape or overcoming a reading slump. The story is appreciated for its generally positive tone and for featuring a relatable "smart girl/popular jock" dynamic that resonated with fans of the genre. Reviewers also noted the authentic portrayal of teenage emotions and behaviors, and some appreciated the handling of family issues, finding the characters and their relationship engaging enough to overlook minor flaws. The book’s straightforward plot and lack of excessive school drama were also cited as positive aspects.

Despite its charm, the book drew criticism for its reliance on common young adult romance clichés, leading some to find the plot predictable and at times, unrealistic. Several reviewers felt that the characters, while having relatable challenges, lacked depth and personality beyond their core traits or family issues, with some finding their actions or emotional reactions overly dramatic. The writing style was occasionally described as cringey or unpolished, which detracted from the reading experience for some. Pacing issues were also noted, with the romance sometimes feeling rushed or like "insta-love." Furthermore, a specific scene involving a character discarding books was widely disliked and considered out of character for a self-proclaimed book lover.

Overall, The Upside of Falling appears to be a divisive read, with many reviewers acknowledging its flaws while still finding it an entertaining and engaging story. It is best suited for readers who enjoy light, feel-good young adult contemporary romances, especially those featuring the fake dating trope and the "smart girl/popular jock" dynamic. Fans of authors known for similar cute high school romances, or those seeking a quick, undemanding read to lift them out of a slump, would likely appreciate its optimistic tone. However, readers seeking deep character development, highly original plots, or polished prose may find it less satisfying, particularly if they are older or have extensive experience with similar tropes.
