Comme par magie

The book is widely praised as an honest and empowering guide to the creative process, resonating deeply with many readers. Reviewers highlight the author's playful yet direct and conversational tone, which effectively dismantles the myth of the "tormented artist" and unrealistic expectations surrounding creative living. Many found the message to be a timely and powerful validation, encouraging individuals to embrace their creative inclinations with curiosity, openness, joy, and playfulness, irrespective of external rewards or recognition. The book is seen as a "permission slip" to pursue creative passions for their inherent value, offering practical advice on nurturing ideas, making time for creative work, and prioritizing completion over perfection. It is celebrated for its inspiring and comforting approach, particularly in addressing and reframing fear as a boring, predictable obstacle that should not dictate creative decisions.

Despite its positive reception, some reviewers express reservations. A common point of contention is the book's "woo-woo" or spiritual elements, particularly the concept of ideas as independent, conscious entities that seek human hosts, which some find too far-fetched. Critics also note that the author's advice, given her significant commercial success, can feel out of touch or even privileged to struggling artists. Some reviewers take issue with the book's characterization of art as "useless" or "nonessential," arguing that it undervalues the profound impact of creativity on society. The author's strong stance against higher arts education, such as MFA programs, is also criticized as potentially narrow-minded or unhelpful. A few readers found the tone overly enthusiastic, self-important, or repetitive, with frequent anecdotes about the author's own experiences that sometimes felt like name-dropping or a memoir rather than universal guidance.

Overall, the book offers a powerful and often transformative perspective on creativity, though its impact varies. It is highly recommended for anyone struggling with self-doubt, creative blocks, or the pressure to achieve external validation for their artistic pursuits. Readers seeking a fresh, encouraging, and less conventional approach to embracing a creative life will likely find it profoundly inspiring and a valuable source of motivation. However, those looking for a strictly practical "how-to" guide, a more cynical or logical perspective, or who are already well-versed in the challenges and resilience required for an artistic career, might find some of its messages less applicable or even frustrating. Ultimately, it serves as a reminder to enjoy the creative journey for its own sake, encouraging readers to unleash their inner potential beyond fear.
