Reviewers widely praise the book as a comprehensive and potentially life-changing resource for understanding nutrition and health. Many describe it as the best book on nutrition they have ever read, highlighting its extensive use of scientific research and evidence to support its claims. The author is commended for his commitment to providing information backed by studies, with reviewers noting the sheer volume of references. The book is structured to first address major diseases and then detail beneficial food groups, empowering readers to take control of their health through dietary choices. Readers appreciate the author's mission to offer unbiased, science-based information, often noting his non-profit motivations. The engaging and accessible writing style, particularly in the audiobook version, also makes complex scientific findings understandable and motivating for a broad audience.

Despite its strengths, the book draws significant criticism for its perceived biases and scientific methodology. A common concern is that while the author promotes a "plant-based" diet, many readers feel it ultimately advocates for strict veganism, overlooking the need for certain supplements like B12 in such a diet. Critics argue that the author's research is heavily "cherry-picked," presenting only studies that support his conclusions while omitting or downplaying contradictory evidence. Some reviewers, particularly those with scientific backgrounds, question the author's interpretation of trials, his understanding of basic pharmacology (like dosage and absorption), and the distinction between correlation and causation. The book is also criticized for its repetitive nature, a sometimes "preachy" or "smug" tone, and for not adequately addressing the complexities of individual dietary needs or patient compliance.

Ultimately, the book is considered an important read, though one that should be approached with a critical eye. While it offers a powerful argument for increasing the consumption of whole, plant-based foods and reducing processed items, some readers feel it oversimplifies complex nutritional science. It is highly recommended for anyone interested in understanding the profound impact of diet on preventing and potentially managing chronic diseases, and for those seeking strong motivation to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Readers who are open to drastically changing their eating habits and are prepared to critically evaluate the presented evidence will likely find it an invaluable and inspiring guide for improving their health and longevity.
