Abhorsen is widely celebrated by reviewers as an epic and deeply satisfying conclusion to its story arc. Many found the book to be a significant improvement in pacing and character development compared to its immediate predecessor. Readers particularly praised the substantial growth of the main characters, Lirael and Sameth, noting their evolution from earlier struggles to confidently embrace their roles. The intricate and unique world-building, encompassing its distinct magic systems and the fascinating realms of Death, continued to be a major highlight, with reviewers appreciating the expanded lore. The book's fast-paced action, constant tension, and thrilling climax kept many readers gripped from beginning to end, often evoking strong emotional responses, including tears. Reviewers also commended the author's thoughtful portrayal of gender roles within the fantasy setting.

Despite the widespread acclaim, some reviewers expressed reservations. A minority found the book to be somewhat anti-climactic or felt it didn't quite match the impact of the first book in the series. A few critics suggested that the narrative, particularly when combined with the previous installment, could feel drawn out or contain moments of slower pacing. Concerns were also raised by some about the emphasis on specific bloodlines for crucial characters, which they felt might overshadow the potential importance of others. Additionally, a desire for a more conclusive ending or a clearer epilogue was mentioned by some, as they felt certain narrative threads were left open.

Overall, Abhorsen is largely seen as a powerful and emotionally resonant finale that successfully delivers on the series' potential. While a few readers found minor issues with pacing or the ultimate resolution, the overwhelming sentiment is positive, highlighting its epic scope, strong character arcs, and rich, immersive world. This book is highly recommended for fans of classic high fantasy, those who appreciate dark yet intricate worlds, unique magic systems, and stories featuring significant character journeys and high stakes. It is particularly well-suited for readers who enjoy a blend of action, emotional depth, and thoughtful thematic exploration within a fantasy setting.
