What other readers say

Liked

Readers largely praise this book as an engaging historical romance, particularly appreciating its World War II setting and the strong research that provides insight into the period. Many found it a captivating and emotionally resonant story, evoking a wide range of feelings from joy to sorrow. The narrative is described as dramatic, well-told, and effective in blending romance with significant historical events without being overly sentimental. Reviewers highlighted the presence of intriguing moral dilemmas, questions of honor, and complex characters, including a memorable "villainous" woman. For many, it served as a delightful and easy-to-read distraction, often considered one of the author's better-written works.

Disliked

However, the book also drew criticism for its adherence to a predictable and formulaic plot, which some found unrealistic or "schmaltzy" and not a work of high literature. Certain readers felt the pacing could be slow in parts, with an overabundance of explanatory details, and found some character portrayals problematic, such as a significant age gap in a relationship or a cliched villain. The presence of infidelity was a significant deterrent for some, impacting their enjoyment of the central romance. Additionally, a few reviewers found the ending to be either boring, too expected, or incomplete, leaving some plot threads unresolved.

In short

Overall, the book offers a compelling narrative for those seeking a dramatic historical romance with a familiar emotional trajectory. It is particularly well-suited for readers who enjoy stories set against the backdrop of World War II, appreciate character-driven dilemmas, and are looking for an immersive, yet generally light and undemanding, reading experience. Fans of the author's established style and those who enjoy a "guilty pleasure" read will likely find this novel satisfying, despite its predictable elements and some narrative choices that may not appeal to all.
