Cuento de Navidad

On a bleak Christmas Eve, seven years after the passing of his business partner, Jacob Marley, Ebenezer Scrooge sat in his counting-house, a man as cold and hard as the flints he struck for a fire. His clerk, Bob Cratchit, shivered in the outer room, barely warmed by a single coal, while Scrooge himself begrudged every extra lump. His nephew, Fred, burst in with a hearty "Merry Christmas!" only to be met with a dismissive "Bah! Humbug!". Two gentlemen seeking donations for the poor were likewise turned away with cruel remarks about workhouses and the "surplus population". Later, in the oppressive silence of his solitary home, a ghostly vision appeared: the spectral form of Jacob Marley, transparent and bound by heavy chains forged from his own greed. Marley, groaning with eternal regret, warned Scrooge that he was destined for an even worse fate if he did not change his ways, announcing that three spirits would visit him in the coming nights.

The first of these spectral visitors, the Ghost of Christmas Past, shimmered into Scrooge's room, a childlike yet ancient figure with a glowing head. It whisked Scrooge back through the mists of time, revealing scenes from his lonely boyhood, abandoned at school, finding solace only in books. He saw his beloved sister, Fan, come to take him home for Christmas, a memory that brought a pang of tenderness to his hardened heart. Then, he witnessed his apprenticeship under the jolly Mr. Fezziwig, a generous master who threw a joyous Christmas party for his employees, reminding Scrooge of a time when happiness was not measured in coin. But the most poignant vision was that of a younger Scrooge, losing his love, Belle, whose gentle heart could not compete with his burgeoning obsession with money. Scrooge, deeply moved, begged the spirit to take him away, tears welling in his eyes.

Next arrived the Ghost of Christmas Present, a majestic, jovial giant, crowned with holly and seated upon a throne of food. This spirit carried Scrooge through the bustling, merry streets of London, where warmth and good cheer permeated even the poorest homes. They paused at the humble dwelling of Bob Cratchit, where a meager feast was prepared with abundant love and gratitude. Scrooge's heart was pricked by the sight of Tiny Tim, Bob's crippled son, a courageous boy whose unwavering kindness touched him deeply, though the spirit could offer no guarantee of the child's survival. The giant then transported Scrooge to his nephew Fred's lively Christmas party, where Fred spoke of his uncle with pity rather than malice, and the guests playfully mocked Scrooge, yet still raised a toast to him. Before vanishing, the spirit revealed two wretched children, Ignorance and Want, clinging to its robe, a stark warning of society's peril.

Finally, a silent, shrouded phantom appeared, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, an ominous figure whose mere presence chilled Scrooge to the bone. This spirit offered no words, only pointed with a bony hand, guiding Scrooge through a series of grim, unsettling scenes. He saw businessmen casually discussing the death of an unpopular, unlamented man. Scavengers picked through the dead man's possessions, selling them for paltry sums, while a poor couple expressed relief at the passing of their unforgiving creditor. Scrooge begged to see some tenderness connected to this death, some sign of grief, but found none, only the deep sorrow of the Cratchit family mourning the loss of their beloved Tiny Tim.

The silent ghost then led Scrooge to a churchyard, pointing to a grave. With trembling hand, Scrooge approached the headstone, only to see his own name etched there. Overwhelmed with terror and despair, he fell to his knees, pleading with the spirit to change his dreadful future, promising to honor Christmas in his heart and live by the lessons of the Past, Present, and Future. He swore he would no longer be the man he was, that he would embrace compassion and generosity.

With a gasp, Scrooge found himself back in his own bed, the bells of Christmas morning ringing out joyfully. He was alive, and the future was not yet written! Overjoyed, he bounded from his bed, a transformed man. He sent a prize turkey to the Cratchit family, surprising them with an anonymous gift, and later, he personally visited Fred, begging forgiveness and joining the festive party. The next morning, he arrived at work early and, with a twinkle in his eye, bestowed upon Bob Cratchit a raise and promised to assist his struggling family. From that day forward, Ebenezer Scrooge became a man renowned for his kindness, generosity, and his profound understanding of how to keep Christmas well, carrying its spirit throughout the entire year.
