Reviewers widely praise the book for its exceptional writing style, noting the author's ability to craft beautiful and profound sentences. Many found the narrative intriguing, characterized by a labyrinthine, dreamlike, and often absurd atmosphere that successfully draws readers into its unique world. The novel is commended for its clever play with literary conventions, such as the duality of the protagonist and the author, and for presenting a cast of interesting and unusual characters, with 1990s Warsaw itself emerging as a vividly depicted, almost standalone entity. Readers also appreciated the book's engaging and often amusing commentary on the post-communist transformation in Poland, along with its philosophical depth. The opening sections are frequently highlighted as particularly entertaining, and the book's grotesque and funny elements were noted.

Despite its strengths, the book garnered significant criticism. A common complaint is that the narrative can be confusing and difficult to fully grasp, leaving some readers uncertain of its overall meaning or purpose. Many reviewers expressed strong discomfort with the portrayal of female characters, finding them objectified, and criticized the overly eroticized descriptions and numerous sex scenes as excessive and repetitive. Some also noted a perceived pretentiousness typical of the author's style. Critics felt the book attempted to tackle too many themes simultaneously, leading to a lack of coherence and resolution, and that it could be tiring due to an overload of information. While the beginning was often praised, some found the middle section weak, and specific thematic elements did not resonate with all readers. The novel was also described as irritating at times, with some feeling it lacked originality compared to the author's previous works.

Overall, the book is a divisive but ultimately intriguing read, offering a unique literary experience. It is not recommended for casual reading, instead requiring thoughtful engagement to appreciate its complex layers. This novel would appeal most to established fans of the author who are familiar with his unique style and thematic concerns, as well as to readers who enjoy unconventional narratives that blend philosophical inquiry with satire and absurdity, much like the game "Disco Elysium." Those who appreciate ambiguity, open endings, and a distant, ironic approach to social and political commentary are likely to find it rewarding. However, readers seeking a straightforward plot, traditional character development, or those sensitive to strong, potentially objectifying depictions of women and sexuality may find it challenging or off-putting.
