Many reviewers found this installment of the Magic Tree House series to be an enjoyable and engaging adventure. Readers appreciated the detailed descriptions of the African setting and its wildlife, highlighting the book's educational value in teaching about various animals and their behaviors. The dynamic between the main characters, Jack and Annie, was often praised, with Jack's thoughtful nature balancing Annie's adventurous spirit. The ongoing quest to solve riddles and progress towards becoming master librarians resonated well with readers, making the experience fun and inspiring imagination for children and adults alike. Many found it to be a short, easy, and satisfying read that draws them into the story.

Despite the positive reception, some reviewers noted a few drawbacks. A common point was that certain aspects of the book, particularly its depiction of the setting and a local culture, felt dated or stereotypical, portraying the country as overly remote or lacking in modern context. The interactions with a local character were described by some as slightly "cringe" or not fully representative. A few readers also felt the story could have been more developed or that the ending felt a little abrupt. Additionally, some found the tone occasionally veered into being a bit too silly, and a general critique of the series' writing style mentioned it sometimes lacked depth, even while acknowledging its educational strengths.

Overall, this book is largely considered a fun and educational addition to the Magic Tree House series, offering a captivating journey for young readers. Its blend of adventure, animal facts, and a compelling riddle-solving plot makes it highly recommended for elementary school-aged children, particularly those who enjoy stories about animals and exploration. It's also praised as a suitable read-aloud for parents and teachers, with its clean content and engaging narrative appealing to a broad age range, including beginners and older readers looking for a quick and light adventure. Despite some minor criticisms regarding cultural representation and pacing, the book successfully continues the series' tradition of inspiring imagination and a love for learning.
