Daddy Long-Legs With Illustrations by the Author

The world had always been the grim, ordered confines of the John Grier Home for Jerusha Abbott, the oldest orphan, where "Blue Wednesday" - the monthly visit of the trustees - was a day of meticulous dread and endless scrubbing. One such Wednesday, after the trustees had departed, a surprising summons came from the dour matron. A wealthy, anonymous trustee, impressed by Jerusha's amusing, if somewhat critical, essay about orphanage life, had offered to send her to college. The sole condition was that she write him monthly letters detailing her progress, though he would never reply, and she was to address him only as "Mr. John Smith." Peeking at his departing shadow, long and spindly in the car's headlights, Jerusha whimsically christened her mysterious benefactor "Daddy-Long-Legs."

And so, Jerusha, quickly renaming herself Judy, embarked on a new life at a women's college on the East Coast. Her letters, brimming with youthful exuberance and often adorned with charmingly crude line drawings, became her only confidantes in this strange new world. She chronicled her initial anxieties about fitting in, her embarrassment over her lack of cultural knowledge, and her fierce determination to learn everything she could. She devoured books, struggled with Latin, and reveled in the simple joys of having her own room and pretty clothes, things the other girls took for granted.

Through her witty observations, Judy introduced Daddy-Long-Legs to her new friends, the sensible Sallie McBride and the snooty Julia Rutledge Pendleton, who, unbeknownst to Judy, was the niece of her benefactor. She shared her triumphs in academics, her burgeoning literary ambitions, and her growing independence. Her letters were a vibrant tapestry of college life: debates in class, late-night study sessions, and the thrill of discovering the world beyond the orphanage walls. She even began to explore her talent as a writer, dreaming of one day publishing her own novel.

Summer vacations brought new experiences. Instead of returning to the orphanage, Daddy-Long-Legs arranged for her to stay on a farm, a place of unexpected beauty and freedom. Here, Judy found solace and inspiration, continuing to write and discovering a deeper connection to nature. It was during one of these summers that she made a curious discovery: the farm had once been home to a boy named Jervis, a detail that stirred a faint, unidentifiable recognition within her.

As the years passed, Judy's letters grew more mature, reflecting her evolving thoughts on social issues, women's suffrage, and her own identity. She yearned for more than just financial support; she craved a genuine connection, often hinting at her desire to meet her mysterious guardian. Yet, Daddy-Long-Legs remained steadfastly anonymous, his silence a constant source of both frustration and fascination for Judy.

A new figure, Jervis Pendleton, Julia's charming and intelligent uncle, began to appear more frequently in Judy's life, sparking a tender attraction. He was kind, engaging, and seemed to understand her in a way no one else did. Their conversations were stimulating, their shared interests many, and Judy found herself falling deeply in love, despite her lingering feelings of unworthiness due to her orphanage past.

The path to happiness, however, was fraught with miscommunication. Judy, fiercely independent, repeatedly refused Jervis's proposals, believing herself unfit to marry into his prominent family and clinging to the idea that her mysterious benefactor held a different, perhaps older, image of her. It was only when Jervis fell gravely ill during his travels, and Judy, filled with despair, finally received an invitation to meet her long-sought Daddy-Long-Legs in New York City, that the truth was unveiled. The tall, long-legged shadow she had glimpsed years ago belonged to none other than Jervis Pendleton, her beloved, who had been orchestrating her education and silently nurturing her all along.
