But the Dark was already stirring, its agents active, chief among them the terrifying Rider, a cloaked figure on a midnight horse, whose malevolence permeated the deepening cold.

As the days pressed on towards Christmas, the weather grew increasingly wild, blizzards raging and snow piling high, a physical manifestation of the Dark's rising power. Will found the sign of wood hidden within an old manor, a journey that briefly transported him through time, where he encountered the Lady once more. She warned him of the Dark's grip, a suffocating cold that held the country captive, and revealed that the sign of fire was essential to break it. During this perilous time, another enigmatic figure emerged, the Walker, a tramp whose allegiance seemed to waver, and whose tormented existence was intertwined with the very signs Will sought.

The search led Will through moments of profound danger and revelation. He discovered that the Walker was, in fact, Hawkin, a man once betrayed by Merriman, who had since become an agent of the Dark, cursed to carry one of the signs until Will could claim it. The struggle was not merely against external forces, but also a test of Will's resolve, as he grappled with the harsh realities of the Light's mission, which sometimes demanded sacrifices for the greater good.

On Christmas morning, the battle intensified around an ancient church, where Will, aided by other Old Ones, fought to repel a powerful assault from the Dark. The wild birds, ancient allies of the Light, guided him through the deepening snow to the collapsed form of the Walker, from whom he finally retrieved the sign of bronze, the second sign Hawkin had carried through the ages.

The climax of this winter battle drew the townspeople to Mrs. Greythorne's manor, seeking refuge from the relentless storm. Here, Will confronted the Rider and the full force of the Dark, wielding his nascent powers and the collected signs. The snow, once a symbol of childhood wonder, now became a brutal weapon of the Dark, threatening to bury everything in an endless, suffocating white. Yet, Will, the last of the Old Ones, stood firm, pushing back the encroaching shadows with the strength of the Light that now coursed through him, a young guardian against an ancient, rising evil.
