In a swift, tragic strike aimed at Roman's weakest point, Jude destroys not only your enemy but also the precious antidote, shattering your hopes for Damen's cure.

Readers of Dark Flame, the fourth installment in The Immortals series, noted some positive aspects despite general frustrations. Many found the book to be a quick read, with an agile pace that kept them engaged in certain moments. Some readers appreciated seeing a darker side to the main character, Ever, and found the tension between her and the antagonist, Roman, to be an interesting dynamic. The exploration of Roman's past also provided a welcome layer of clarity for some. Additionally, a few reviewers observed positive character development for Damen and Jude, with Damen showing more of his original charm from the first book and Jude's backstory being further explored. The ending, while controversial, was surprising for some and considered an improvement over previous books' conclusions. For a segment of the readership, the book's ability to maintain intrigue about the characters' ultimate destinies was enough to encourage them to continue the series.
However, the overwhelming sentiment among reviewers was one of significant disappointment. The protagonist, Ever, garnered widespread criticism for consistently making reckless, selfish, and immature decisions, often failing to learn from her mistakes or follow advice. Her romantic interest, Damen, was frequently described as overly understanding, boring, and lacking assertiveness, with his constant forgiveness of Ever's blunders being a major point of frustration. Other characters also faced sharp criticism; Haven was universally disliked for her whiny, self-absorbed, and antagonistic behavior, while Roman's role was seen by some as repetitive and ultimately underutilized. A primary complaint revolved around the plot's lack of progression, with many feeling the central conflict - the inability of Ever and Damen to be physically intimate - was excessively prolonged over multiple books, making the story drag and feel like filler. Repetitive actions and internal monologues from Ever were also frequently mentioned as irritating. Many readers felt the series had sharply declined in quality since its initial installment, leading some to abandon it entirely.
In summary, Dark Flame is largely perceived as a weaker entry in The Immortals series, struggling with repetitive plotlines and frustrating character arcs that many felt were detrimental to the overall narrative. While some readers found minor improvements or intriguing character dynamics, these were often overshadowed by widely criticized elements. This book is likely to appeal most to existing fans of the series who are deeply invested in the characters and are committed to seeing their stories through to the end, regardless of perceived flaws. It may also suit readers who enjoy young adult paranormal romance and are willing to overlook slow plot progression and a protagonist's significant character flaws in favor of discovering the ultimate resolution of a long-running magical saga.
