Das fahle Pferd

Reviewers largely praise "Hercule Poirot's Christmas" as a classic and expertly crafted locked-room mystery that showcases Agatha Christie's enduring genius. Many highlight the intricate plotting, abundance of clever clues, and well-placed red herrings that effectively keep readers engaged and guessing until the very end. The fast-paced narrative and engaging dialogue are frequently commended, along with the well-developed cast of characters, even if some are intentionally unlikable. The unique holiday setting adds a distinct atmosphere to the whodunnit, and Poirot's brilliant analytical mind and observational skills are consistently lauded for leading to an ingenious and surprising resolution that most readers did not anticipate.

Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception, some minor critiques emerged. A few reviewers noted that, contrary to its title, the book isn't particularly "Christmas-y" or festive, with one finding Poirot's commentary on the holiday somewhat controversial. Some felt that Poirot himself appeared a bit subdued or less dynamically characterized in this installment. While most were surprised by the ending, one reviewer claimed to have guessed the murderer early on. Additionally, a couple of readers felt the book's promotional claims of being "Christie's most bloody" were exaggerated, and one critic suggested that some narrative devices felt excessive or stretched believability.

Overall, "Hercule Poirot's Christmas" is highly recommended as a quintessential Golden Age mystery, often cited as one of Agatha Christie's more ingenious and entertaining works. It offers a challenging and satisfying puzzle perfect for readers who enjoy intricate plotting, clever misdirection, and a truly surprising reveal. Fans of Hercule Poirot will appreciate his keen intellect at work, and the book is particularly well-suited for those seeking a compelling whodunnit with a distinctive, if not always cheerful, holiday backdrop, making it an excellent choice for a seasonal mystery read.
