Das Sanatorium

The book is widely praised for its exceptionally atmospheric and claustrophobic setting. Reviewers frequently highlight the chilling ambiance of an old sanatorium, dramatically reimagined as a luxury hotel high in the isolated Swiss Alps. The vivid descriptions of the stark mountains, endless snow, and the building's eerie history contribute to a strong sense of menace and danger, particularly when a massive blizzard cuts off the hotel from civilization. This "locked room mystery" setup, combined with the inherently creepy backdrop, creates an intense and suspenseful environment that many readers found captivating and page-turning, keeping them guessing about the unfolding events.

However, many readers found the execution of the plot and characters to be significantly flawed. A recurring criticism targets the protagonist, Elin Warner, a detective on leave for PTSD. Reviewers describe her as often unbelievable and inept in her investigative efforts, prone to panic attacks and making questionable decisions that undermine her professional credibility. Her extensive trauma and neuroses were frequently seen as overdone and distracting rather than adding depth. Furthermore, the supporting characters were often perceived as undeveloped, unlikable, or stereotypical, with some male characters specifically noted for being condescending or problematic. The mystery itself, including the motives and final reveal, was frequently labeled as convoluted, farfetched, unbelievable, and ultimately unsatisfying, with many pointing out significant plot holes and a lack of cohesion that detracted from the overall experience.

Ultimately, this book garners a highly mixed reception. While lauded for its strong premise and immersive, chilling setting, many felt it failed to deliver on its full potential due to issues with character believability and a less-than-convincing plot resolution. Despite these criticisms, readers who prioritize a powerful, creepy atmosphere and a sense of isolation in their thrillers, and are willing to suspend disbelief for the sake of suspense, may still find it an engaging read. It is likely to appeal most to fans of "locked room" mysteries set in dramatic, foreboding locations, who enjoy a constant stream of twists and turns.
