Der Clan der Klauen ein Drachen-Roman

Jo Walton's Tooth and Claw is widely praised for its incredibly imaginative and unique premise: a Victorian-era social novel populated entirely by anthropomorphic dragons. Reviewers consistently highlight the brilliant world-building, which seamlessly integrates dragon physiology and lore with the strictures of 19th-century society. Details such as dragons eating their deceased family members as a form of inheritance, their elaborate hats serving social and legal purposes, and their scales changing color to signify a loss of maidenhood are frequently cited as examples of the author's creativity and wit. The book is lauded for its sharp social commentary on class, gender, and religion, delivered through a narrative voice that many found charming, clever, and reminiscent of classic Victorian literature. Many readers enjoyed the intricate family drama, legal disputes, and romantic entanglements, finding the characters distinctive and the overall pacing masterful.

However, some readers found aspects of the book less compelling. A common criticism is that the pacing can be slow, particularly in the beginning, making it difficult for some to become fully immersed in the story. While the concept of dragons in a Victorian setting was a draw for many, a few felt that the dragon elements sometimes felt like a mere gimmick, or that it was hard to reconcile the dragons' physical characteristics (like claws and large size) with human-like activities such as riding in carriages, wearing hats, or doing paperwork. Certain characters were also described as unlikeable, self-centered, or boring, which detracted from the reading experience for some. A desire for more action or a deeper dive into specific characters and plot details was also occasionally expressed, with some finding the resolutions too quick or unsatisfying.

Overall, Tooth and Claw is an ambitious and largely successful literary experiment that earned critical acclaim, including the World Fantasy Award. It offers a rich tapestry of social intrigue, family dynamics, and unique world-building that appeals strongly to readers who appreciate a blend of fantasy and classic literary styles. Fans of Victorian novels, particularly those by Anthony Trollope, Jane Austen, or Charles Dickens, will likely enjoy the homage and satire, especially if they also have an affection for dragons and imaginative genre-bending. However, those seeking fast-paced action, traditional fantasy, or a strictly humorous tone might find its deliberate pacing and blend of the mundane with the fantastical less engaging.
