Many readers found "The Summons" to be an enjoyable and suspenseful read, praising John Grisham's signature writing style for its smooth, easy-to-read quality that makes it a true page-turner. Reviewers highlighted the author's ability to create intrigue and develop characters, even if some felt this aspect could be stronger. The initial premise, involving a significant cash discovery and the mystery surrounding its origin, was widely regarded as fascinating and compelling, drawing readers into a complex situation filled with twists and unexpected paths. The audio version was also commended for its brilliant narration, and for many, the book served as a rediscovery of Grisham's work, providing a fast-paced journey with moments of chilling suspense and a surprising ending.

Despite its strengths, "The Summons" received considerable criticism, primarily concerning its plot and pacing. A common sentiment was that the story felt thin, predictable, or lost its momentum in the middle section, leading to a less compelling experience. Many reviewers expressed disappointment with the ending, describing it as anti-climactic, incomplete, or simply not as strong as the initial setup. Some found the narrative to be boring in places, particularly the extensive detailing of the protagonist's movements and investigations, which felt repetitive and lacked dynamism. Critics also noted a perceived decline in Grisham's writing from his earlier works, with some suggesting a lack of intricate plotting, insufficient character development, and even proofreading errors.

"The Summons" appears to be a divisive book among readers, eliciting strong reactions ranging from deep enjoyment to significant disappointment. While it may not stand as one of Grisham's most acclaimed works, those who appreciate his distinctive narrative voice and a compelling mystery will likely find it an entertaining read. The book is recommended for fans of legal thrillers and suspense who enjoy a character-driven investigation into a moral dilemma, even if the plot takes unexpected turns and the resolution is not universally praised. Readers seeking a quick, engaging story with a focus on uncovering a secret, rather than complex legal battles or robust character arcs, might particularly enjoy this offering from John Grisham.
