Readers generally commend Chuck Palahniuk's "Diary" for its distinctive and inventive style, which many describe as captivating, bombastic, and wickedly original. The novel's unique narrative structure, primarily presented as a "coma diary" written in the second person, is frequently praised as an innovative approach to storytelling. Reviewers found the book to be a thought-provoking exploration of art, suffering, and the human condition, often delving into cynical satire and unsettling truths. For many, the author's ability to create vivid, disturbing imagery and build a compelling female protagonist contributed to a gripping and memorable reading experience that challenges conventional expectations.

Conversely, some readers found Palahniuk's signature style to be a significant drawback. Criticisms include the repetitive use of certain phrases and ideas, as well as the anatomical descriptions and shifts in narrative perspective, which were perceived as gimmicky or irritating. A segment of the audience found the book to be a tedious or boring read, describing it as "unliterary" or relying on "shock-for-shock's sake" rather than substantial content. The plot, while original, was sometimes deemed far-fetched or clunky, with some feeling the ending was rushed or unsatisfying. Additionally, a few reviewers struggled to connect emotionally with the characters, finding them underdeveloped or kept at an arm's length.

Ultimately, "Diary" is a polarizing read, characteristic of Palahniuk's work, and is best suited for specific types of readers. It is highly recommended for existing fans of the author who appreciate his transgressive voice, dark humor, and willingness to explore uncomfortable themes. Readers who enjoy cynical satire, psychological thrillers, or stories that delve into the darker aspects of creativity and societal critique will likely find this book compelling. While some consider it less overtly grotesque than other Palahniuk novels, it still contains twisted imagery and psychologically uncomfortable scenes, making it ideal for those seeking unconventional and challenging literature.
