When twelve-year-old Claudia Kincaid decides to run away, she plans it with the precision of a straight-A student. Feeling unappreciated and bored with the monotony of her suburban life, she doesn't want any ordinary adventure. She craves comfort, beauty, and a grand experience, so she chooses an extraordinary hiding place: New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art. With her younger, money-conscious brother Jamie in tow, they navigate the vast museum, hiding from guards, sleeping in antique beds, and bathing in a fountain.

Just as the novelty of their secret life begins to fade, they are captivated by a new exhibit - a beautiful marble angel statue whose sculptor is unknown. The museum officials suspect it might be the work of Michelangelo, but no one can be certain. This mystery gives Claudia the purpose she was looking for. The quest to uncover the statue's origin takes the siblings from the museum's library to the doorstep of the statue's eccentric former owner, Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Their journey becomes more than just running away; it transforms into a search for meaning and the one secret that will allow them to return home different.
