Die Verschwörung der Idioten: Roman Deutsch von Alex Capus

A green hunting cap, squeezed atop a fleshy, balloon-like head, framed a face perpetually set in an expression of disapproval. Its earflaps, bristling with uncut hair and fine bristles, stuck out like errant turn signals, while full, pursed lips, often caked with potato chip crumbs, completed the portrait of Ignatius J. Reilly. He was a man of immense girth and even vaster intellect, a self-styled scholar of medieval philosophy, who found the modern world a repulsive affront to his delicate sensibilities and a testament to its pervasive degeneracy. Residing in the squalor of his mother's Uptown New Orleans home, Ignatius spent his days either contemplating his grand, unfinished literary opus or indulging in what he considered the necessary evils of the flesh, often inspired by the memory of a long-dead pet collie.

One fateful day, a confrontation with Patrolman Mancuso in a department store, sparked by Ignatius's boisterous objections to perceived injustice, hurled him unwillingly into the harsh realities of employment. His long-suffering mother, Irene, weary of his idleness and incessant pronouncements, insisted he find work to cover the damages he caused. This unwelcome venture into the working world led Ignatius through a series of increasingly bizarre and humiliating jobs, each one a fresh opportunity for him to rail against the ignorance and vulgarity of contemporary society.

His first foray landed him at Levy Pants, a failing garment factory owned by the beleaguered Mr. Levy. There, Ignatius, armed with his unique brand of self-righteousness and a typewriter, attempted to incite the factory workers into a rebellion against their capitalist oppressors, all while lamenting the decline of ethics in business. His efforts, predictably, resulted in chaos rather than revolution, further cementing his belief in the world's inherent idiocy.

Next, he found himself hawking hot dogs from a mobile cart for Lana Lee, the formidable proprietress of the Night of Joy, a seedy strip club in the French Quarter. This environment, teeming with the very debauchery he so vehemently denounced, provided Ignatius with endless material for his mental critiques. He encountered the club's cynical bouncer, Burma Jones, an African American man constantly trying to avoid work and the police, and Darlene, a stripper with a cockatoo act. Ignatius, ever the unwitting catalyst for disaster, managed to turn even the simple act of selling hot dogs into a theatrical spectacle of outrage and indignation, culminating in an absurd plan to sabotage the club from within.

Meanwhile, Patrolman Mancuso, a dim-witted officer perpetually on the verge of being fired, was forced by his captain to wear various humiliating disguises in the French Quarter in a desperate attempt to catch perverts. His hapless attempts to blend in and apprehend criminals often brought him into the orbit of Ignatius and the eccentric denizens of the Quarter, creating a parallel narrative of incompetence and misunderstanding. Mrs. Reilly, seeking solace from her son's oppressive presence, found herself drawn into the orbit of her gossiping friends and a burgeoning, somewhat scandalous, relationship with a charming, if slightly predatory, suitor.

Throughout these misadventures, Ignatius maintained a fervent correspondence with Myrna Minkoff, a radical intellectual from New York, whose letters often served as a sounding board for his verbose diatribes against everything modern. Their intellectual sparring, though entirely one-sided in Ignatius's mind, highlighted his unique blend of academic pretension and profound laziness, a characterization that explored themes of individual effort and inertia.

As the various storylines converged, the fabric of Ignatius's carefully constructed world began to unravel. His mother's exasperation reached a breaking point, threatening to commit him to a mental institution. In a frantic attempt to escape this dire fate, Ignatius, with the unexpected assistance of some of the very "dunces" he so despised, orchestrated a desperate flight, a final, ignominious escape from the world he believed was conspiring against his genius. The city of New Orleans, with its vibrant, chaotic energy, served as the perfect backdrop for this grand, tragicomic symphony of human folly and self-delusion.
