Die Wand

I arrived at the hunting lodge in the Austrian mountains, a place of quiet retreat, expecting a weekend with my cousin Luise and her husband, Hugo. They had gone down to the village for dinner, leaving me with their dog, Luchs. When morning broke, and they had not returned, a prickle of unease stirred within me. I set out to find them, Luchs trotting faithfully at my side, but my path was abruptly halted by an unseen, unyielding barrier. It was smooth, cool, and utterly impenetrable, stretching across the valley, a transparent wall that sealed me within a small, forested world. Beyond it, everything was frozen, silent, dead.

The initial shock was a cold wave, threatening to drown me in despair. But the practical demands of survival quickly asserted themselves. With Luchs, the loyal hunting dog, as my first companion, I began to take stock. The lodge, thankfully, was well-stocked with provisions, a testament to Hugo's foresight. Yet, these supplies were finite. I found a cow, Bella, and later, a stray cat, forming a small, unlikely family. My days transformed into a relentless rhythm of labor: tending to Bella, milking her, cultivating a small garden, gathering wood, and hunting what little game remained within my enclosed world. Each sunrise brought a new set of tasks, a new challenge to overcome.

Life became raw, stripped of all the comforts and complexities of the world I once knew. The wall, an inexplicable, silent monument, remained, a constant, chilling reminder of my solitude. I began to write, a report of my days, using the few sheets of paper I possessed. This act of writing became my anchor, a way to hold onto sanity, to document the unfolding of my isolated existence, though I knew not if anyone would ever read these words. It was a testament, a defiant assertion of self against the encroaching silence.

Seasons turned, painting the mountainsides with their changing hues, each bringing its own trials. The birth of Bella's calf, a joyous, tender moment, brought new life and a renewed sense of purpose. I named her Stier, and watching her grow, along with the kittens born to my cat, Tiger, filled the profound emptiness that often threatened to consume me. My connection to these animals deepened, becoming the very core of my being. They depended on me, and in their need, I found my own reason to endure, to protect, to strive.

The wilderness became my home, its harsh beauty both a comfort and a constant threat. I learned its rhythms, its dangers, and its subtle offerings. The memories of my past life, of society, of human interaction, began to fade, becoming distant, almost irrelevant. The roles and expectations that once defined me dissolved, leaving behind a simpler, more primal identity. I was no longer a woman of a certain age, with a history and a name; I was simply a survivor, a guardian of life within the wall.

Years passed in this solitary existence, marked by the cycles of nature and the quiet companionship of my animals. Then, one day, an unimaginable intrusion shattered the fragile peace. A stranger appeared, a man from beyond the wall, his presence a brutal, terrifying shock. In a senseless act of violence, he killed my beloved Stier and then Luchs. The world, which I had painstakingly rebuilt, collapsed around me. In that moment of profound loss and primal rage, I raised my rifle and ended his life.

The act left me shaken, forever altered. It was a stark reminder of the unpredictable cruelty that could still penetrate my sanctuary, a testament to the dangers of humanity itself. But even in the wake of such devastation, life insisted on its continuation. Bella would have another calf, and new kittens might arrive. The cycle of birth, life, and death, of enduring and rebuilding, remained. My paper was almost gone, my report nearing its end, not because my story was over, but because the means to tell it had run out. My resolve, however, remained. If fire or ammunition failed, I would find another way. I would deal with it.
