Dog Man Unleashed (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition)

Reviewers largely praise the book for its engaging and hilarious content, particularly appealing to its young target audience. Many found it to be a very funny and fun read, with some declaring it even better than the first installment in the series. Readers, both young and old, appreciated the creative storyline, the memorable characters, and the numerous "fun bits" and "insane shenanigans" that lead to abundant giggles and laughs. The book is lauded for its ability to keep kids engaged, making them eager to read subsequent books. Its silly, cheeky humor, quirky illustrations, and quick pace were frequently highlighted as strong positives, with many enjoying the antics of the titular hero and the recurring villain, Petey the Cat.

Despite the widespread enjoyment, some reviewers expressed reservations. A common point of contention among adult readers, particularly those with a literary background, was the book's unconventional use of grammar and intentional misspellings, which some found "appalling" as reading material for children. Other criticisms included the perception that the book felt somewhat "random" or like a "set-up" for future installments, with some characters and plot elements feeling disconnected or not fully developed within this specific story. A few adult readers also found the plot confusing, struggling to keep track of multiple antagonists and their schemes. While generally praised for humor, a couple of reviews noted it wasn't as "funny or action-packed" as other books in the series or felt harder to get into compared to the author's previous works.

Overall, Dog Man Unleashed is widely considered a highly enjoyable read, especially for its intended audience of young children, with ratings often reflecting this enthusiasm. It is particularly recommended for young readers, including reluctant ones, who are drawn to child-like humor, "mindless action," and a fast-paced narrative filled with silly situations. Fans of Dav Pilkey's distinctive style, characterized by intentional misspellings and crudely drawn artwork, will find much to love. While adult readers may have differing opinions on its literary merit or plot coherence, the consensus is that the book successfully entertains children and encourages a love for reading. It's a solid sequel for those who enjoyed the first Dog Man adventure and are looking for more goofy, fun-filled escapades.
