Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz The Oz Books #4

Dorothy Gale, accompanied by her faithful dog Toto and her new companion, a white kitten named Eureka, finds herself on a journey to visit her cousin Zeb in California. They travel in a horse-drawn buggy with Zeb and his old cab-horse, Jim. Suddenly, the earth trembles and cracks open, swallowing them whole into a deep chasm. Their buggy, acting like a parachute, slows their descent, but terror grips them as they fall into the unknown depths.

They land in a strange, underground world, illuminated by phosphorescent rocks. Here, they encounter the peculiar Mangaboos, a race of vegetable people who grow on stalks and believe the surface dwellers are evil. The Mangaboos, led by their Prince, capture Dorothy and her companions, intending to punish them for falling into their realm. They demand that Dorothy and the others be judged by their great Sorcerer.

The Sorcerer, a giant, terrifying vegetable man, orders Dorothy and her friends to be transformed into vegetables themselves. Just as their fate seems sealed, a familiar face appears: the Wizard of Oz, who had previously flown away from Oz in his balloon and also fallen into this underground world. The Wizard, despite his earlier reputation as a humbug, uses his wits and a few clever tricks to outsmart the Mangaboo Sorcerer, convincing them that he possesses great magic.

Freed from the Mangaboos, the group, now including the Wizard, begins a perilous journey through various subterranean kingdoms. They encounter the Braided Man, a creature made of braided straw, and the invisible, silent Valley of Voe, where they must navigate by sound alone. Each new encounter presents a unique challenge, testing their courage and ingenuity.

Their adventures lead them to the land of the Gargoyles, winged creatures made of stone who are fiercely protective of their domain. The Gargoyles, with their sharp beaks and claws, attack the travelers, forcing them to devise a clever escape. The Wizard, with his knowledge of trickery, helps them to outwit the stone creatures and continue their arduous journey upwards.

As they ascend, they discover the city of the Dragonettes, tiny, jewel-encrusted dragons who breathe harmless puffs of smoke. Though initially intimidating, these creatures prove to be more curious than dangerous. The travelers learn that the Dragonettes are also seeking a way to the surface, having been trapped underground for generations.

Finally, after much hardship and many strange encounters, the Wizard reveals his last trick, a way to ascend back to the surface world. They emerge, not in California, but in the magical Land of Oz. Dorothy is overjoyed to be reunited with her friends, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion, and to meet Princess Ozma.

In the Emerald City, Dorothy recounts her extraordinary adventures to Ozma and her friends. The Wizard, no longer a humbug but a respected figure, decides to remain in Oz, where his skills in illusion and invention can be put to good use. Dorothy, having faced dangers both above and below the earth, finds solace and happiness in the wondrous land she now calls home, surrounded by her beloved companions.
