Dove mi trovo

This novel is widely praised for its exquisite and precise writing, described as poetic, nuanced, and elegant, even in translation. Many readers admired the author's ability to convey deep emotional truths with spare language, finding beauty in the sober descriptions of daily life and cityscapes. The book's unique structure, consisting of short, diary-like vignettes, was appreciated by those who enjoyed its meditative and introspective quality. Readers connected with the narrator's observations on solitude, freedom, and the quiet moments of existence, often feeling a strong emotional resonance with her inner thoughts and reflections on family history and personal choices. The author's impressive feat of writing the book in Italian and then self-translating it into English also garnered significant admiration.

However, some readers found the book's lack of a traditional plot to be a significant drawback, describing it as an "exercise" or a series of fragments rather than a fully formed narrative. The narrator's character was not universally liked; she was sometimes perceived as overly melancholic, detached, judgmental, or even "navel-gazing," leading to a sense of distance rather than connection for some. The pacing, while meditative for some, felt slow or tedious to others, with some chapters not quite landing their intended impact. Concerns were also raised about the translation, with some reviewers wondering if the shift in language resulted in a blunter expression or a deliberate downplaying of the English prose, and others found the emphasis on the translation process tiresome. Ultimately, for a portion of readers, the book left them with a feeling of "so what?" rather than profound insight.

Overall, this is a quietly reflective novel that divides opinion, appreciated more for its artistic execution and thematic depth than for its narrative drive. It is best suited for readers who enjoy literary fiction focused on introspection, character studies, and the subtle nuances of human experience rather than a strong plot. Those who appreciate a meditative pace, explore themes of solitude, freedom, and self-discovery, and are open to experimental narrative structures like vignettes will likely find much to admire. Fans of authors known for their reflective and observational styles may also find this book appealing.
