Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde

The fog-laden streets of London held a peculiar dread for Mr. Utterson, a reserved and methodical lawyer. His quiet routine was shattered by a chilling tale from his cousin, Mr. Enfield, concerning a monstrous man named Edward Hyde. Enfield recounted witnessing Hyde trample a young girl in the street with utter indifference, only to settle the matter with a cheque signed by the highly respected Dr. Henry Jekyll. This anecdote deeply unsettled Utterson, for he knew that Dr. Jekyll, a dear friend and client, had inexplicably named this same Mr. Hyde as the sole beneficiary in his will.

Utterson's concern grew into a gnawing suspicion. He sought out Hyde, encountering a figure that stirred an instinctive repulsion within him, a sense of profound deformity that defied easy description. Despite Jekyll's assurances that he could rid himself of Hyde at any moment, the lawyer remained uneasy, fearing that Hyde held some sinister power over his friend, perhaps through blackmail. The mystery deepened as Jekyll became increasingly reclusive, and Hyde's shadow seemed to stretch longer and darker over the city.

A year later, the city was gripped by horror. Sir Danvers Carew, a prominent Member of Parliament, was brutally murdered in the street. A maid, the sole witness, described a man of small stature, wielding Jekyll's own walking stick, in a fit of murderous rage. The broken half of the cane was found near the body, and a letter addressed to Utterson was discovered on Carew. When the police, accompanied by Utterson, investigated Hyde's lodgings, they found evidence of a hasty departure, including a burnt chequebook. Jekyll, appearing deeply shaken, swore he had ended all association with Hyde, even producing a letter from Hyde declaring his intention to flee. However, Utterson's astute clerk later revealed the handwriting in Hyde's letter to be identical to Jekyll's own.

The esteemed Dr. Hastie Lanyon, a long-time friend and colleague of Jekyll, soon fell gravely ill, a man utterly changed by some terrible shock. Before his death, Lanyon entrusted Utterson with a sealed letter, to be opened only upon Jekyll's death or disappearance. As Jekyll retreated further into his laboratory, his butler, Poole, grew increasingly distraught, convinced that something dreadful had befallen his master. He implored Utterson to intervene, describing how the voice from the locked laboratory was not Jekyll's, but a different, chilling sound, and how the figure glimpsed within was small and hunched.

Driven by Poole's desperation, Utterson and the butler broke down the laboratory door. Inside, they found the twitching body of Edward Hyde, who had taken his own life. Jekyll, however, was nowhere to be found. Among the papers on the desk lay Jekyll's will, amended to name Utterson as beneficiary, and two envelopes: Lanyon's letter and a lengthy confession from Jekyll himself.

Lanyon's account revealed the horrifying truth. Jekyll, desperate for a specific chemical, had sent Hyde to Lanyon's home to retrieve it. There, before Lanyon's very eyes, Hyde had consumed a potion and, in a grotesque transformation, shifted back into the form of Dr. Henry Jekyll. The shock of witnessing this impossible metamorphosis had been too much for Lanyon, sealing his fate.

Finally, Jekyll's own confession laid bare the full, tragic saga. He had long believed in the fundamental duality of human nature, a constant battle between good and evil within every soul. Driven by a desire to separate these two aspects, to indulge his darker impulses without consequence, he had concocted a potion that transformed him into the purely evil Edward Hyde. Initially, Jekyll controlled these transformations, reveling in the freedom Hyde offered for his suppressed vices. But Hyde's evil grew, escalating from mere mischief to the brutal murder of Carew. The transformations became involuntary, occurring even without the potion, and Hyde began to resent Jekyll's existence. The supply of a crucial ingredient in the potion dwindled, and Jekyll realized that the original batch must have contained an impurity vital to the transformation. Trapped, with Hyde asserting more and more dominance, Jekyll wrote his final confession, anticipating his permanent transformation into the monstrous Hyde, pondering whether Hyde would face justice or choose to end his own existence.
