One morning, as Gregor Samsa awoke from uneasy dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous vermin. He lay on his hard, armored back, struggling to turn over, his numerous thin legs waving helplessly in the air. His first thought was of his demanding job as a traveling salesman, the grueling schedule, and the tyrannical chief clerk. He had a train to catch, a debt to pay off for his parents, and a family to support. This grotesque new form, he mused with a strange detachment, would surely complicate his already arduous life.

His mother's gentle knocking, followed by his father's impatient tapping and his sister Grete's soft, questioning voice, pierced through his dawning horror. He tried to respond, but his voice had changed, becoming a mere squeaking, an unintelligible animal sound. The frantic attempts to open his locked bedroom door, a task now monumental for his new body, only added to the growing panic on both sides. When the Chief Clerk himself arrived, demanding an explanation for Gregor's unprecedented tardiness and hinting at dismissal, Gregor, with immense effort, managed to unlatch the door. The sight of him, a giant insect, sent his mother into a faint, his father into a furious rage, and the clerk fleeing in terror.

Confined to his room, Gregor, once the sole provider, found himself utterly dependent. His sister, Grete, initially took on the role of his caretaker, bringing him food and cleaning his room. She discovered his new preferences for rotten scraps and decaying leftovers, and he would hide under the couch to spare her the sight of his repulsive form. He often listened, hidden, to the hushed conversations of his family through the door, learning of their increasing financial struggles and their resentment over his inability to work. His presence, once their security, became an immense burden.

As the days turned into weeks, Grete's initial compassion waned, replaced by disgust and impatience. She barely tolerated entering his room, cleaning haphazardly and shoving food in without a word. His parents, particularly his father, grew openly hostile. One evening, drawn by Grete's violin playing, Gregor crept out of his room, hoping for a moment of connection, only to be met with horror by their new boarders and a renewed, violent attack from his father, who pelted him with apples. One apple lodged painfully in his back, festering and slowly weakening him.

Gregor's world shrank further, his once human thoughts becoming increasingly vague and tinged with the instincts of his new form. He understood he was a burden, a grotesque obstacle to his family's happiness. He stopped eating, his body, already weakened, withered away. One quiet morning, the charwoman discovered his lifeless, shriveled body. His death brought not grief, but a profound sense of relief to his family.

With Gregor gone, a weight lifted from the Samsa household. His parents and Grete felt a newfound freedom and optimism. They decided to move to a smaller, cheaper apartment and began to consider Grete's future, noticing her blossoming youth and beauty. They looked forward to the prospect of finding her a suitable husband, their own lives stretching out before them with renewed hope and possibility.
