Oathbringer is widely lauded as a masterful installment in an epic fantasy series, consistently praised for its expansive world-building that delves into new cities and cultures across Roshar, enriching the series' intricate lore and history with numerous revelations. Reviewers highlight the deeply compelling character development, particularly focusing on Dalinar's profound journey and complex backstory, which provides significant emotional depth. The large cast of characters is noted for feeling distinct and authentic, undergoing meaningful growth through themes of hope, redemption, transformation, and overcoming personal struggles. The action sequences are described as numerous and expertly executed, leading to a "Sanderson Avalanche" climax that is frequently called mind-blowing, heart-stopping, and truly epic, bringing together multiple viewpoints in a thrilling conclusion. The author's prose is appreciated for its clarity, immersiveness, and vividness, making the extensive narrative accessible and engaging. Many readers found the book to be an astonishing experience, a testament to its value and the author's storytelling prowess.

Despite its strengths, Oathbringer receives notable criticism, primarily concerning its pacing and considerable length. Many reviewers found parts of the book, particularly the initial hundreds of pages, to be slow, bloated, or a chore, suggesting that the narrative sometimes felt unfocused or contained excessive "fluff." Shallan's character arc was a point of contention for several readers, who described her internal struggles and multiple personas as confusing, repetitive, or even frustrating, leading some to dislike her character. Additionally, some fans expressed disappointment with the reduced focus on Kaladin, feeling his storyline was less prominent or that his personal conflicts felt somewhat recycled compared to previous books. A perceived proliferation of new viewpoints and sub-plots was also noted, with some feeling it diluted the core narrative and that certain plotlines were left undeveloped or resolved too conveniently. A minor point of criticism was directed at a perceived "love triangle" that felt unnecessary to some readers.

Overall, Oathbringer is overwhelmingly considered a brilliant and astonishing addition to the series, cementing its status as a highly recommended epic fantasy. While not every reader found it to surpass its immediate predecessor, it is consistently rated highly and seen as essential reading for those already invested in The Stormlight Archive. This monumental book is particularly suited for fans of sprawling, intricate epic fantasy who appreciate deep character studies, complex magic systems, and narratives that explore profound themes of personal growth, forgiveness, and resilience. Prospective readers should be prepared for a substantial commitment in terms of length and a slower build-up in certain sections, but will ultimately be rewarded with an emotionally charged experience and a spectacular, high-stakes conclusion.
