Eisenhower in War and Peace

Jean Edward Smith's "Eisenhower in War and Peace" is widely lauded as an exceptionally thorough and well-researched biography that offers a fresh and nuanced understanding of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Reviewers consistently praise Smith's accessible, clear, and engaging writing style, which brings the complex historical figure to life without resorting to hagiography. The book is commended for its balanced portrayal, presenting both Eisenhower's considerable strengths and his acknowledged shortcomings. Many highlight its success in challenging popular misconceptions, particularly those stemming from earlier biographies, and in showcasing Eisenhower as a more astute and decisive leader than often perceived. Smith effectively captures Eisenhower's administrative prowess, his talent for consensus-building, delegation, and managing strong personalities, which were crucial to his success as Supreme Allied Commander during World War II and later as president. His handling of Eisenhower's military career, especially the war years, is frequently described as superbly detailed and insightful, while his presidential achievements, such as ending the Korean War, navigating Cold War crises, and advancing civil rights, are compellingly argued. The author's diligent use of a variety of sources and his transparent approach to his conclusions are also highly appreciated.

Despite its many strengths, some reviewers note that the book's considerable length and density can be challenging. A common criticism revolves around the structural balance, with some feeling that Eisenhower's early life, West Point years, and post-presidency are skimmed over in favor of his military and presidential careers. The shift from a chronological narrative for his military life to a topical approach for his presidency is also mentioned as potentially sacrificing important context and detail, leading to a "hasty ending" in some sections. Several reviewers found the extensive discussion of Eisenhower's rumored affair with Kay Summersby to be overly detailed or repetitive, questioning its narrative necessity. While generally objective, a few readers felt Smith's admiration for Eisenhower occasionally led him to be overly defensive of certain presidential decisions, such as his approach to civil rights or the U-2 incident. Additionally, some desired more intimate personal details or "tiny tidbits" about Eisenhower's private life or the fates of supporting characters, feeling the book didn't fully penetrate his enigmatic persona. The frequent comparisons to Ulysses S. Grant, though often apt, also became "wearing" for some.

Overall, "Eisenhower in War and Peace" is overwhelmingly recommended as an excellent and essential biography for anyone interested in Dwight D. Eisenhower, World War II, the Cold War, or mid-20th century American history. It stands as a vital resource for readers seeking a comprehensive, well-researched, and nuanced re-evaluation of a pivotal historical figure. The book is particularly suited for students and enthusiasts of political and military history who are prepared to engage with a substantial, scholarly work that aims to dispel myths and provide a deeper understanding of Eisenhower's leadership and impact. Readers who appreciate detailed historical analysis, a balanced perspective, and a compelling narrative, even if lengthy, will find this book highly rewarding. However, those looking for a quick overview or a purely intimate psychological portrait might find its scope and depth more demanding.
